tried it on my 8300 with .52...new password entry is "starred out"...when entering a password of three characters, get the message "The password that you typed is too short."

EDIT: Are you on BES? Your IT policy could be requiring you to use a longer password? I just use BIS. No IT policy of any kind

Super bizarre. Thanks for trying guys. I have no idea how another 8300 with the same OS can be so different.

For the record, I bought it off craigslist. It is an unlocked 8300 with a cable & wireless splash screen, which I presume means it came from that carrier (Canadian? I bought the phone in Miami). Loaded fresh with official, not beta .52 this morning. Creating passwords not starred out and 3 letters accepted.

It sucks what you are going through angryuser7. As far as the level of security is concerned, can't you just choose not to set or enable a password? I only use the SIM password on mine and I can disable that if I want to.

I know that sounds kind of unsecured but I do run Roblock. So I guess in a strange way I'm hoping someone steals my phone.

Thanks for the sympathy. It's not such a big deal anymore, just wanted to vent over losing data for this absurd bug. I can just use a 4-letter password or no password. I wanted to warn others too, although apparently most others can't replicate my problem.

Honestly angryuser7 I would love to find out what is causing it. It is such a random thing that none of us have seen. It is also shocking to see a device work like this.

Ditto, except now I back up every week instead of every 2 days.

Wirelessly posted (8100 Pearl)

Once per week for me. Or sooner depending on the latest OS upgrade.

I have an 8300 curve on AT&T running 4.5.0.52...I cannot set a 3 character psw, and the psw is starred out.

For anyone who wants to know why this was happening, I figured it out. The culprit was the blank IT policy from this forum. I had used to clear a phone for a friend, but forgot to uninstall it. Even when updating my phone with a brand new OS, it was reloading without my realizing it.

I figured it out and removed it...for those who still don't believe me try loading it. It will let you set a 3 char password that it wont accept back to unlock!

grrr.....I guess it's not really RIM's fault, but still, the fact that an IT policy alone can set something that stupid? lame

IT policies are meant to be secure and can be customized any number of ways. It's just serving its purpose.

Perhaps it was poorly written...I haven't really looked into it. I'm guessing the IT policy however specifically allows a 3 character password, which RIM allows, but then RIM wont accept a 3 character password back.

Am I mistaken? Is it the IT Policy that is doing both? Allowing a 3 char password, but disallowing it back specifically?
