Default Questions about a BB on Ebay

Please Login to Remove!

I have read the FAQ here on what to ask at an Ebay auction. Every one I question and ask for the IMEI does not respond to me. The phones I am looking at are all being sold as Brand New In Box. The sellers all state that the phones have a guaranteed clean ESN.

My question, what is an ESN and if that is clean is the phone really new?

ESN is the same as IMEI just different networks. You would have an ESN on Verizon. I have sold phones on eBay as well and I never respond to that question either.

If you feel comforatable with the buyer (good feedback), pay in a way you have recourse you should be okay.

Clean means not reported lost or stolen. Even new in box phones could potentially be reported stolen.

Personally, if I couldn't get the IMEI/ESN to check, I'd stay away from it.

I tend to agree for a couple reasons.. First of all, if nothing to hide, no big deal... Second, if someone can't take the time to respond with something as easy as an ESN (which is also on the box in case it truly is factory sealed) I don't have the time to give them my money, lol...

I agree with both your points. It is a decision I made in selling. I think my seller reputation speaks louder than the ESN.

It is also fairly easy to get an ESN blocked. And I know sellers who have published the ESN just to have someone get it blocked and the phone rendered useless.

An IMEI won't get you anywhere in the U.S. The U.S. Carriers do not block GSM phones.

Troy,

Thank you for the clarification. Of course I am not sure how comfortable I am. And, as you stated clean does not necessarily mean not lost or stolen. The way I see it, it's a gamble. It would save me $100 off the store retail price, but not sure that's worth it.

But, thanks again for setting me straight. At least now I know why they aren't answering. If I can take the ESN and use it to report a phone stolen that would be an issue for the seller.

What way would give me recourse? PayPal or credit card? Most sellers want you to pay with PayPal.

Please also check the sellers feedback.

Also check out Craigslist.com transactions here are done face to face and you can try it before you fork over any money.
