Default The "1" at the beginnng of phone numbers screws up ID

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

I am having a problem with my caller ID. I have many numbers in my BB entered as (xxx) xxx-xxxx (US phone numbers). The caller ID transmitted by T-Mobile gives the number as 1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx, which means the BB does not recognize the number and does not display the corresponding name from the address book, it only displays the phone number.

Is there any way to correct this other than going into my address book and adding a 1 to the hundreds of entries in there?

Thanks,

Charlie

I have always added the 1 to phone numbers. In fact, you should add +1 to them in case you are out of the country and want to call home.

However, have you gone into the phone options >Smart Dialing and entered your country code of +1 in there?

All my numbers in my blackberry are entered as (xxx) xxx-xxxx. Never had a problem with caller ID.

It really doesn't matter. Caller ID should still work. Most people have their country code added in Smart Dialing, though.

It could also be a network issue. You might give your carrier a call.

I have entries with and without the 1 and even without the area code on some and they all still appear correctly. The CID picks up at lease the 7 digits if it's in area code, and 10 if it's not. So... adding the 1 should not make a difference.

Just so the OP doesn't feel like this is only an issue that he is experiencing... I can recall this happening to me at times also. I have my work voice mail forwarding to my BB... and maybe 1 out of every 50 calls will present the number in a fashion that doesn't match what is in my address book. I've seen the number come through as one of the following: xxx-xxx-xxxx, 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx and +1-xxx-xxx-xxxx. I'm not sure what would do this... but it seems more of a carrier issue than a BB issue.

Leaving the 1 off can lead to problems. My office phone's local exchange is 540, which is also an area code in VA. When someone in my area code tries to call a number in the 540 area code without the leading 1, and the next 4 digits happen to match the last four digits of my number, I get the call. Hasn't happened in a while, but I must have explained this a dozen times to Timmy's mom.

When roaming from the UK the foreign networks I've experienced will auto-prefix the home international code, meaning the phone does not need numbers stored with +XX. Of course it depends where you're going..!

I called t-mobile, they "changed" some things. I'll report back as to whether it works now. I think the better think might be to export all the address book to Excel and add +1 to all the numbers. I travel internationally quite a bit, and this is probably useful.

Thanks for the help.

In Outlook, you go to your contacts then under File select Import/Export then Export to a file then select Comma Seperated Values(Windows) Click Next on contacts then Next to save the file in your MyDocuments folder or browse to change the saving directory. This process creates a .csv file that can be opened in Excel then Imported back to Outlook using the same Import/Export option. I used this to transfer contacts from my phone to my wifes because she was missing a lot of our family and common contacts for some reason.

FYI... All this is assuming you synch your BB to Outlook or that you use Outlook in the first place...lol.

As for using this method to update all the 1s, this is a bit of a long way around. If you go into Contacts in Outlook and select the current view as Phone List you can easily click on each phone number the same as in Excel and add the 1.

That's a good idea; I thought the Excel might be faster because I have all my phone numbers entered as (xxx) xxx-xxxx, and I can do a global find and replace of "(" with "+1 (".

I just did a cleanup of my contacts the other day using Outlook and took the oppourtunity to combine some of those that I had in using Name Home and Name Cell to utilize the Blackberry's ability to store multiple numbers per contact. I went from 400+ contacts down to 300+ and made it easier locate my contacts. The only thing that annoys me is that all the contacts defaulted to Work instead of Home so I had to move them manually.

yeah, the BB likes to default everything to work as it's historically a business device. Getting them organized properly in Outlook is the best thing to do.

Once in a while when I am on hold in my office or something sitting at my office desk I will edit and clean up a few phone numbers, a few at a time.

i don't place the leading 1 in each number, just the 10 digit US format.

FYI, you don't need the 1- to dial any number in the US from your bb.
