Default MDS Conn Svc doesn't start

Please Login to Remove!

BES Exchange 4.1.6 running on Windows 2003 Standard SP2 R2.

I used the BlackBerry Configuration wizard to reconnect a formerly standalone BES that had no users (BES1) to the SQL 2005 database of another standalone BES (BES2). Everything worked except the MDS Connection Service. It will not start. I have been able to work around it by mapping the MDS Connection Service of BES2 to BES1, so all the handhelds in the BlackBerry domain are good to go for browsing, but would like to be able to remap to BES1 in a pinch.

Here's what happens:

The service goes into the "stopping" state (according to Windows) immedately after I start it.
The BlackBerry manager always states that the MDS_CS on BES1 is "Running"--no matter what Windows says
Windows Application Log states that the MDS Connection service "disconnects from the database"

How can I get this MDS Connection Service running? Thanks for your help.

So, BES1 had it's own DB and then you pointed it to anotehr DB. The MDS-CS listing won't exist for BES1 in that DB because it was not originally installed. So, you will have to rely on the BES2 MDS-CS.

If you had installed BES1 on that DB then you would have gotten the BES1 MDS-CS in that DB.

Just to be sure you can query the DB to see if it exists:

select * from mdsconfig should get you the listings on that DB. If there is a listing for both BES then look at the app log some more or the MDS log to get he exact error.

Default MDSConfig

Thanks, you totally understood.

I couldn't fit the whole query result here, but in a nutshell MDSConfig shows that the MachineName field is set to the name of the server with the database--for both MDS_CS services.

Due to prior experience in areas such as failover I know I can change it using the following commands:

osql -E
use besmgmt
update mdsconfig set machinename='BES1' where id='2'
go

After I ran the above OSQL command I was able to start the MDS Connection Service.
