Default Upgrading to Server 2003, what to do with BES?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

I'm just wondering what the best practice would be for this situation:

We're upgrading from Windows Server 2000 to 2003, with a server that has both Domino and BES on it. Using a SQL db for the BES. After the server upgrade, both BES and Domino will both be put back on the server with the same IP and name.

Should I just re-install the BES and put all settings back to how they were before? I'm trying to get away from having to re-activate all my users again.

As long as you keep the existing SQL database and point BES to it, then none of your users will need to reactivate.

Make sure you get good backups of the SQL database and the BES related .nsf files on Domino.

Did this myself last October....

Backup state databases, nsf, *.id, BESMGMT.MDF, BESMGMT.LDF
Document the Name & IP if OLDBES.
Shut down OLDBES and all BlackBerry Services
Install the same version of BlackBerry on NEWBES
Copy from backup the state databases, nsf, BESMGMT.MDF, BESMGMT.LDF to NEWBES
Start BlackBerry Services. It should pickup right away without any reactivation.

Basically, it's a knife-edge cutover.

We've got about 100 users.

Sounds fairly simple!

What about upgrading the Domino version too? Would that cause any problems with BES? Going from r6 to r7

I'll simply add: Image the server before doing anything to it. Set a time limit on how long it's going to take you and if you go over it, simple re-image it and re-assess what went wrong.

I say that not because of BES, but because that's how I do any major upgrade.

I went from 6 to 7 and performed the upgrade as if it was any other Domino box without BES running on it. No problem!

I would upgrade the old box's Domino, if supported in 2K0, before doing the cutover.
