According to the specs on blackberry.com, the Bold supports the following video formats:

Video format support: DivX 4, DivX 5/6 partially supported, XviD partially supported, H.263, H.264, WMV3

I made an mp4 from home movies (AVCHD raw footage) with Pinnacle Ultimate. The file is a 1280x720 / 29.97 fps / 5000k bit rate mp4 file. I transferred it to my Bold fine and when I go to play it I hear the audio but don't see any video.

Any thoughts on what could be going on here? Are there limitations to the mp4 specs? mp4 and H.264 are the same thing, right?

Getting video to work on this thing is killing me, between DRM and file formats.

Have you tried using the media manager in the DM to convert it and move it to the BB.

I didn't. I am trying to avoid installing Roxio if I don't have to - I have used their products in the past and I find they are complete resource hogs (running all sorts of processes in the background) and difficult to uninstall. I just used mass storage mode to manually move the file over to my memory card.

Have you tried scaling down your video?? Isn't the resolution of your video larger than your display? I use mp4 all the time without problem on my curve. But I also use the 320x240 screen size for the videos.

Haven't tried...would have thought it would just automatically play the video by adjusting down the resolution....obviously having a 1280x720 video on the Bold's screen is overkill but didn't realize I had to perfectly match the resolution to see anything?

Man this thing is picky.

It doesn't have to perfectly match....but when I had them as larger videos, the playback was choppier, and the sound didn't always sync up, so I just made them smaller and I haven't had any problems since...just thought it would work the same for you. Also, no sense in wasting space on the memory card with the oversized videos

I have found that some videos play with video and others don't. To account for this, I use mencoder to resize them to the screen size (to save space as well as resources) and re-encode them so that every video works. I usually just run the encoder with the device as the target, so it writes the file directly where I want it.

The command I use is this:

"C:\Program Files\mplayer\mencoder.exe" %1 -o %2 -vf scale=480:-2 -of avi -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4 -lameopts abr:br=128

Where %1 is the input file and %2 is the output file (Make sure to put quotes around them if there are spaces in the path or filename). Of course, you have to download mencoder (part of mplayer) which can be found here: Entering MPlayer homepage

This command automatically scales it to the WIDTH of 480, not taking into account the height, but maintaining the aspect ratio.

I just use Total video Converter and they have all the settings for all the bbs. Never had a problem
