How do you add a contact to your blackberry messenger? everytime I click the menu button and then click add contact to messenger a screen comes up and says "empty". meaning there is no contact selected. Can you please assist me as my wife is asking me this question and I dont know the answer.

Simply begin typing a name in the "empty" field.

I usually add my contacts to my contact list, including their pin, and then add them into my BBMessenger.

ok. question, what is the "pin" and where do I get it and what is it used for. Also when My wife goes into the messenger and selects contacts and follows steps it does not allow her to select any contact to put into the messenger. what could be the problem.

Every BB has a PIN. You can find yours in Options >Status. Make sure you add each other's pin to your address books for each other. Then you should be able to select a contact. You have to have a pin or email address that is affiliated with a BB) in order to use BBMessenger. It's BlackBerry to BlackBerry only.

ok, so you have to have a email or pin saved to a contact in the address book before blackberry messenger will reconize the contact through messenger? is this correct.

so messenger goes by pin and or email instead of phone number?

Or when you go into blackberry messenger and click on add contacts, you can just enter the person's PIN number or email address that's associated with their blackberry. The other person should receive a notification to accept you and when that person does it will then be in your contacts list in messenger.
