I have a bold that was purchased unlocked and sim free. I am having no problems whatsoever with .190.

Upgrade to .190
Upgrade worked flawlessly. Thanks. Browser loads and renders faster and it seems you get more life out of the battery.

Wow, a Mac user using a BB and not an iPhone. I respect that.
I wish I could help, as far as I know you need a PC to upgrade the BB OS. The Storm I think is the only device that can upgrade over the air. Even for the Storm, though, this functionality may still be in Beta?
Sorry.

I like my bold but RiM should see how easy it is to update the iphone 3g 's OS.
If these OS updates were handled like the iphone OS updates it would be less stressful.

I have an unbranded Blackberry 9000 and I tried your procedure and it gives me an error saying "This system software is not designed for the connected device [A:0x00000043]"
The phone when turned on with a t mobile sim card gives me a 507 error with a box in the middle of the screen
Pleas advice

This time around, with the Bold, I haven't found any theme that I like better than the ATT, except maybe the Orange. They all have the same folders from which you may want to move some icons. Of course, you can see the BB Maps icon with the non-ATT themes. There are some other minor differences.

Where can I find more detailed instructions on this? where is this file? what exactly am I supposed to delete in the file?
a a newbie - so dont know how to do this. have never done this before. Sorry for the newbie questions.

The Blackberry.alx file is in the Program Files>Common Files>Shared>Loader Files>9000-V4.6xxxxxxx directory.
Edit the Blackberry.alx file in Notepad, search _vendorID, then delete all the _vendorID="1xx" phrases within the file, making sure to leave the > intact at the end of each remaining (shorter) string. There are several such instances of this phrase. Then resave the Blackberry.alx file in Notepad, and run the update or the Application Loader in DM 4.6 or higher.
For complete instructions on updating a BB and editing files, see the beginning of this thread, or search for more detailed BB update tutorials and threads in this forum.

OS update for your own provider
I've never updated a Blackberry OS before, under my own carrier.
When AT&T releases their OS upgrade, will it be in the form of an
OTA procedure for AT&T users, or will it be the same as the procedure outlined
Here for other carriers' OS?

It may be a web update...meaning you connect your BB to your computer and go to the website to update. However, you will still be able to update this way. It's best just to use the latest version number you can find.
You're safe to load this version. It will likely take ATT quite a while to get one newer than this.

Because it hasn't gone through the carrier's testing processes yet.
I put them through my own testing.

An EastAsia release does exist for this OS and I can confirm that the package, app and platform versions are the same as listed here - I located it via Google.
Cheers,

Resending service books, Reregistering 3rd party apps
I've read some posters in this thread saying they needed to resend the service books after upgrading the OS in order for wifi to work. If I'm on BES, does this mean I have to call the IT folks and have them do that, or should things work immediately after the upgrade?
Also, what do people mean here when they talk about the hassle of reregistering 3rd party apps after the upgrade?
Thanks.

Won't void your warranty, some carrier's may not provide support should they find out your device OS is not one of their offical releases.

Yes, the BES activation is lost on every upgrade which is annoying, so you'll have to get that re-done.
Yes, also apps like Gmail, iSkoot, Gmaps all seem to get reset to default, though for some reason OperaMini doesn't. Plus if you have upgraded Docs2Go you'll need to upgrade again unless you rename one of the installer files.
But so far I've found that all my WiFi APs are kept but Bluetooth pairings vanish.
All in all a fairly inconsistent experience but it seems to get better with each new major release from RIM and beats losing everything I suppose.
