Is the button set unique because of the red numerals? Just wanted to make sure, because you said "black button set"

Thanks, looks great! I am next!

black button set is the SIDE buttons. stock SIDE buttons are silver. They sell the Black SIDE buttons. But you will still use the silver charging connectors and a couple other stock buttons.

Hey guys... First post and I'm talking about modding my Bold! WOOHOO!!! hahaha!!!

Anyhow, what I was wondering is an explaination about the melting of the buttons. I don't quite understand what people are saying. I've ordered the black bezel, black buttons and the tools to do it all from cnn.cn and have a soldering iron so I am confiedent I can do the job. Looks straight forward anyway. Or is it something that will be obvious when I see it?

Plain black certainly looks better and I can't wait to get rid of the carrier branding on the bottom plate part!

I just ordered all this as well. A soldering iron is needed? What needs to be soldered?

Thank!

i used a solder iron but other members used a small flat head screw driver and used a lighter to heat up the tip of the screw driver.

what you want to do is install the new buttons on the new black case first.

they have small rubber tabs and plastic nipples that they go thru, yoiu just want to gently melt the plastic nipple on the backside of the buttons so they stay on and don't fall off.

I never melted anything and mine are perfect and dont fall off. I don't think this is really needed if you ensure the tabs are pushed into the rubber holes on the buttons before you put the BB back together.

I replaced my silver bezel due to scratches and reused the same buttons. They would not stay on when I tried to install them on the new bezel (I guess the holes got stretched out) so I used a very small dot of super glue. Worked fine.

Same here. The only issues I had was in getting the charging contacts off the old bezel, I had to bend them back a bit as I twisted them getting them off.

what i did was take a pair or tweezers and grab the bottom portion of the charging contact and pull back towards the side of the case. seem to come out easily. its wedged inbtween to plastic grooves.

then to re-install in new case, put the silver tab part thru the case hole and bend the tab back down.

Same here, no soldering was required for me.

I just did my bezel replacement. I was going to do it last night but I had too much coffee and didn't want to try it until I was a bit less wired.

I also did not melt the tabs for the buttons. I ordered black replacements from cnn.cn along with the bezel and torx screwdriver. Interestingly, they did NOT include the top Mute/Standby button, so I reused that. My replacement buttons all stayed put when I pushed them into place, at least enough to re-assemble the Bold. So my Mute button is silver, the battery cover latch is silver, and all the rest of the buttons are black. Along with the smooth black plastic battery cover I'm sporting this looks like an entirely different Blackberry.

I did have one "oops!" moment as I finished the procedure the first time. I finished re-assembly, tried everything out to make sure all the buttons worked and that all the connections were intact, then plopped it into my charging cradle. And nothing happened. It's supposed to go into that black standby screen with the clock, but nothing happened for me. Uh-oh! What did I screw up this time?!?! I failed to transfer the charging contacts from the old bezel to the new one. So back apart it came, worked out the contacts carefully from the original bezel, laid them into the new one complete with the gold cellophane tape, and put it back together yet again. For me it was maybe 20 minutes, start to finish to restart to refinish. D'oh! All better now. Everything works like it did before I took it apart, and I'm happy to report that I have no extra pieces after putting it all back together. Which is nice.

I can't wait to take it to the AT&T store and show it off to the reps there. I had a Bold in there about a month before AT&T released it. They were all turning in their iPhones for the Bold and very frustrated that it was taking so long. My Bold was fondled quite a bit that day!

Since you forgot to transfer the charging contacts, I have to ask: did you remember to move the rubber channel for the microphone from the old bezel to the new one?

Yes, that I DID remember! I had only just read the tip to remember that in this thread, right before the procedure. Otherwise I never would have even though to do that.
