Nextel aka Sprint Iden doesnt support SMS, theyre currently the largest carrier in the world who does not support mobile originated sms. So they use a weak and incomplete version of mms. No matter the message content. Which means is always data and you cannot receive them during a phone call. The mms servers on Nextel doesn't have a proper resend queue for undelieverd messages because the system is not up to date and is a patch work of many systems working together to make it happen. Like having windows 95 on one pc and vista on another and having a middleware program to make them capable.

Not to make you feel any worse, but I received my replacement phone to the first one that had the texting nightmare and guess what.......same problem with this one. Is it possible that my luck is that bad? Worked fine until I powered cycled the phone. Then presto.....no more text messages. I swear this is really beginning to %^&$# me off.

This was also another guy's post from the crackberry site:

"Hello All,

I have been following this bug for several weeks now and I want to thank all of you for the help with the work arounds and config suggestions that have been posted. I have had my 8350i for several weeks now and although I love the phone, this MMS and text messaging problem as been a huge concern.

My 30 day trial is nearing expiring so I felt I needed to call to see if I needed a phone replacement. I explained my situation (that I upgraded to the BUG-FREE REPORT OS version, hosting routing daily registration gig, and turning phone on and off to get texts). The rep said she was familiar with this and that it is A SOFTWARE BUG NOT HARDWARE. The also said that Nextel is currently working with RIM and a PATCH WILL BE AVAILABLE BY FEBRUARY 2009.

She also confirmed that only a battery pull is a sure fire way to get texts to come in. That really sucks, but if she is correct, I can wait a few more weeks. This phone is great."

Default wow.

I have to say, after reading up on various threads and doing my research, this is one of the absolute worst product launches I have ever seen. A software update is needed asap.

I sell cars and work a lot of hours, why in the effing world should I have to do a ton of research and spend hours of my own time to simply "make my phone work?" Nextel/sprint should be ashamed imo.

The thing should work right out of the box. Especially for very simple things like sending and receiving texts. Why should I have to do more "work" to make something I use for work, work? Oh yeah, pulling and re-inserting my battery to see if I have new texts, that's f*cking convenient. 500 dollar list price for this phone? LOL.

Now sometimes with an incoming phone call and I press answer, the first 5 seconds of the call are played through the speakerphone instead of the headset.

When bluetooth is activated, direct connect doesn't even work.

And then there's the texting problems, this phone has a lot of really annoying bugs. When are the fixes coming nextel? My 2 year old blackberry pearl that I had on t-mobile functions better than this thing. Unless you need direct connect, avoid this phone until a patch is released that fixes this garbage.

I don't know if anyone else here has done the OS update yet, but I was having the same texting problem and as soon as I did the OS update my text messages started coming in. It's been about a week now and I haven't missed a text. No need to power off and do all the other tricks anymore.

My version on the phone had the same V# as the update, but I did it anyway and I'm good.

I did develop the phone/speakerphone problem post OS update though...

Just my $.02

When you click on a name and hit the BlackBerry menu button there should be an option for MMS. Also when you go to options and scroll down MMS is there too..

I know that I am a month late to this thread but I just got my 8350i. The MMS problem that I have is that I can receive messages but I does not show who sent it. It only shows time and date. Also there is not an option to reply so I cant even ask who its from. However I can send messages.
Thanks

SMS messages are normally words only. MMS messages can have a video, picture, or some other type of media attached.
