Dang, my Curve 8330 says 1xEV (EV as in 3g) so isn't the curve already a 3g phone?

For CDMA providers, yes.

Yes, Verizon is a CDMA provider. If you have an 8330, you get their version of 3G.

In addition to the 8330, the following CDMA devices are 3G-capable:
7250
8703e
8830
8130
9530

Indeed. I only listed the 8330 as this thread was related to 3G curves. But as dc/dc stated, all those CDMA models are 3G.

True. I guess I shouldn't have confused things by adding other devices.

in most peoples opinion the 8330 is not a 3g device and neither is the storm, as to be a true 3g device it can simultaneously do voice and data... however the only device to do that is the 9000 bold...

And this is a misconception and misunderstanding on your part.

Yes, to be a true 3GSM device it must be able to pass voice and data simultaneously, but in the CDMA realm, the ratified 3G standard is 1X EV-DO, thus making the devices mentioned above "3G".

Further, the 8707, 9500 and 9530 (when in UMTS mode) can all pass voice and data simultaneously in addition to the 9000.

Actually, I believe CDMA had 3G before GSM.

3G - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
The first pre-commercial 3G network was launched by NTT DoCoMo in Japan branded FOMA, in May 2001 on a pre-release of W-CDMA technology. The first commercial launch of 3G was also by NTT DoCoMo in Japan on October 1, 2001. The second network to go commercially live was by SK Telecom in South Korea on the 1xEV-DO technology in January 2002. By May 2002 the second South Korean 3G network was by KTF on EV-DO and thus the Koreans were the first to see competition among 3G operators.

3G/WCDMA ~ GSM World
3G isn't the name of the standard, it's a descriptor.

The name of the 3G standard for GSM is UMTS.
