Hi all, still a new BB user, but really enjoying my Bold. A question on JSanders advice to remove browser. How does that affect. GPS function? I assume email still works, so GPS too? To new I guess, don't understand the whole process yet.

Welcome to the forums.

Yes everything will still work, you just wouldn't have access to the BlackBerry Browser.

What kind of a response would you expect.

I've got a great program for you to try......it's called self control.

I would say he is looking for supportive responses. This sounds like an addiction IMO. It is easy for you or I to say "try self control" but neither you and I have the addiction. Have you tried telling that to an alcoholic or a drug addict, what about even a smoker?

This guy is looking for assistance to break his addiction (habit), I would say that is a positive step towards self control.

Agreed jsconyers.

Anyone who knows what they are talking about, as with any addiction, admitting you have the addiction is the first step.

The initial user may not be a troll, but a couple of the comments here may very well be such.

My corporate blackerry was restricited and they did something rather ingenious. They blocked the browser serivce books from being sent to the devices. Which sucks as we can no longer install anything ota(huge pita and cut the usefulness of the device anyway /rant off) Is it possible on the bis end to block/restrict which service books are sent to the device? I know for several years att blocked google/yahoo/aol I'm from being downloaded from being provisioned to the devices(until recently ~6 months)

I don't know of a way to block the browser service book. You can delete it, and it just gets pushed back. Deleting the browser cod file from the Java folder on your OS install folder on your PC, is one way.

From another perspective this thread will add to the database and may help someone else who does not feel comfortable posting their issue on this site or any site.

You might consider posting in a different part of the forum or at least start a new thread. Your topic isn't really related to the original one and that's going to restrict the exposure you get from others seeing your thread.

I am using BES and our company uses our corporate internet filter through BES. Works very nicely.

I wonder though, if a user has a newer blackberry with WIFI, couldn't they circumvent the filtering that BES would do if the user is connected through WIFI?

There is a company in America called Jnet that have a web filter for blackberry. It costs $40 to sign on, and $6 monthly thereafter. Their phone number is 718-625-5638.

I tried removing the cod file, as described above, and I was unable to then open any emails.

Does anyone know why this would be, and if there is any way of working around this problem.

Couple things to add to this thread:

1) it's amazing that there are so many apps for PC's (I use Safe Eyes, it's really good) that do this but not for BB's. Also, there are parental control apps that many carriers offer (including mine) but while they work for browsers on other smartphones, they don't work for the BB.

2) Thanks JSanders and akosnitzky - I'm on BES but my IT admin did the same thing (deleted that file) and then the browser on my device was disabled. He had to create new user group (with me the only member) so that this policy applied to me and no one else. (I just said I didn't want my browser, didn't get into details as to why).

3) king_wang - you're not alone, good for you to reach out for help in making a positive step towards cutting off access. It's the only way. Have you followed through on the steps above? If not, do it - today!

JSanders or anyone who can help, I'm trying to find the file and I don't have the java file option. When I do C:programfiles/commonfiles/researchinmotion/ All I get for options is
AppLoader
BBBI Drivers
BBWebSLLauncher
Modem Drivers
RIMDeviceManager
USB Drivers

I've installed the most up to date version of the BB Software on my computer but I can't seem to find the specific daemon.cod file to delete. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Super, if you have installed the OS to the PC...

--Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\shared\loaderfiles\*yourOS*\java

-Create a new folder in the \java folder and name it "Removed".

-In the /java folder find the browser_daemon.cod file and click to CUT and then in the "removed" folder click to paste.

-Connect your BlackBerry to the USB

-Go to Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and double click on the loader.exe file.

-App Loader will open. If a message pops up to upgrade, cancel that.

and proceed with the prompts, you should see as it processes a short message saying the browser_daemon is being removed.

Anytime you reboot, you will likely see an java exception error just after reboot. Ignore it.
