Talking BES & Cached Mode

Please Login to Remove!

Hello All

I am about to install BES 4.1.6 and we have Exchange 2K7 and a mix of Outlook 2003 and 2007 on the estate. I plan to install the BES without the desktop redirector integrated into the desktops. RIM do not recommend turning on cached mode when using BlackBerry but as I'm not using the desktop redirector why should it matter?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

We are using Exchange Cached mode (no desktop redirector) with no problem. Install the latest MR on top of SP6 (there was some problem with Sent Items and Caching mode in bare SP6).

Can you tell me what the problem / symptoms were because our support company refuses to support any MR's but only the base SP. I am interested in going back to them and ask them but would appreciate if you could give me some info on the issue you mention.

From MR1 release notes:

Quote:
SDR 184848: In BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.1 SP4 and later, if your users had Microsoft Outlook 2007 installed and configured in cached mode, the users' BlackBerry device shows the received icon for all sent items.
In BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.1 SP6 MR1 and later, this issue is resolved.

Yup same here, all cached mode and no probs. That rant blog makes me laugh. He says Laptop users are good candidates for cached mode but BB users not. I'm pretty sure I don't have a single BB user who doesn't have a laptop

I have spoken to RIM about this and they stated that Cached Mode can cause severe issues for BlackBerry. They confirmed that they will asked you to disable Cached Mode if you have a T-Support Agreement.

LOL they also say that if ping time is >75ms you have to change your topology . OK so cached mode does make things messier and causes more admin work but it doesn't cause us issues that we can't fix/work around. Like I say we run fine with cached mode (and without TS) :->.

If you call TS with an issue and switching off cached mode fixes it, ok that's it. But if it doesn't, they will fix the issue and you can go back to cached mode later. It's just like MS used to be with VMWare and Exchange (if we can prove the issue doesn't exist on a physical, box support ends, if we can't no probs).

There are known problems if you sync using DM/redirector on your PC, but if you are purely wireless, you should be ok.
