Turning off predictive text:
There are two places you can change settings for predictive text... Options/spell check is one spot. Other spot is options/sms text. With both of those options changed, I no longer get text suggestions when typing. I only type on the full qwerty, so not sure about what happens with suretype.

As for the original poster, all the problems are minor. Here are some suggestions:
1. Get talklock for screenlock during calls. It is free and works great.
2. Typing with the surepress screen takes a bit of getting used to, but once you get used to it, you can type just as fast as a physical keyboard. I type as fast as I did on my 8830,
3. If you haven't done so already, upgrade your OS to something higher than 4.7.0.99. I'm running the hybrid .114 OS and it is awesome. You'll notice a significant performance improvement.
