In your browser configuration, what is your default browser?

I don't think it will work on hotspot. I remember having a discussion about which browser configuration will allow wifi browsing and which will not. I'll search for that thread and post the url here so you can check it and see if it helps you out.

K, much appreciated man. I heard it was suppose to be on hotspot which is why I switched it.
I haven't had luck with either though.

Thought I would be able to locate the thread in my subscription and unfortunately I cannot search while on mobile so you will have to either search for threads created by me or for one dealing with internet browser versus blackberry browser.

I beleive I found the thread.
My wi-fi symbol is there on my home screen but the "wi" part is in grey and the "fi" part is in black.
Does this mean I'm connected?

No, if its grayed out it means that your not connected. When the wifi is connected, it will be very bright, you can see the difference quite easily. You need to check your wireless configuration.
If the thread is dealing with which browser can automatically switch between wifi and gprs/edge browsing, then that's it.

Went to browser, got the same message and instead of exiting, I hit the menu button and went to "go to"
I typed in google and it worked.
Both with the connection on and off, so why did i get the message?

If it is grey it means you are connected to hot spot (Wi-Fi router), but that the blackberry is now able to connect to connect to the Blackberry infrastructure. In this state you should be able to browse the web using the "Hot Spot Browser", assuming that the hot spot is allowing you to do so.
If you have a Blackberry Data Plan, and the Blackberry is able to connect to the Blackberry infrastructure (using port 443), then the WiFi logo will become bright and you will be able to browse the web over Wi-Fi using the "Internet Browser" (or "Blackberry Browser" if you are on a BES).
If the hot spot does not allow your device to connect to the internet, then you won't be able to browse anything at all via WiFi
In short: no Wi-Fi logo, no Wi-Fi connection; Grey Wi-Fi logo, connected to the hot spot, but not yet or not able to connect to blackberry infrastructure; Bright Wi-Fi logo, connected through the hot spot to Blackberry Infrastructure. In each case where the Wi-Fi logo appears, the name of the hot spot should also appear near the name of your wireless carrier.

So basically, since I don't have the bb data plan the wifi logo won't be bright right?
But since I don't the logo will stay semi grey correct?

Assuming you can connect to the web site that hosts the OTA you want, then yes. Though there are probably ways carriers could prevent this, so no guarantees.
I don't see the attraction of a Blackberry without a Blackberry data plan. You end up not being able to use 75% of the technology you paid for.
