Loosening Verizon's Grip?

Hello folks,
Not sure exactly the terminology, but I think I want to "unlock" my Storm. I am a Verizon customer, and I plan to stay one, but I want the features that RIM meant to be used on the Storm to be available for me to use. I basically, just want to use my phone the way it was meant to be used, and not have to pay Verizon a bunch of money for these "services". Things like the ability to tether my phone to my laptop, use GPS navigation, things of that nature.
So if unlocking is what I am wanting to do, does anyone know of a good tutorial on how to do it?

Unlocking the device will do none of that.
As long as Verizon is your carrier, you only have the abilities they offer and under their contracts. You can't get around the tethering charges as long as you tethering on their network.
Does that make sense?

It does make sense. I was hoping that there was a way. I know that when I had a Razr v3m from Verizon I was able to unlock the features and use it to teacher to my laptop and all that using the unlimited data plan that I already am paying for. |

The BlackBerry is not a RAZR and cannot be "hacked" like a RAZR.
Furthermore, what you're trying to do is wrong IMO. You are trying to find a loophole to save you some money. That will only cause the rates to go up for everyone else and they will have to pick up the bill.

I do not see it as wrong, nobody should be paying for it, I am paying for an unlimited amount of data usage, so what does it matter if that data is going directly to my BB, or going through my BB to my laptop. When paying for an unlimited data plan I personally feel that you should be able to use that data, without limits.

I see your point. However, your unlimited data really isn't "unlimited." It's capped at 5 gb. Verizon isn't the only carrier to limit it to 5 gb, nor are they the only carrier to add an additional charge for tethering.

It matters... for starters, your unlimited plan was priced with the equipment you will be using in mind. You will use significantly more data on a laptop than you will on your hand held, thus taxing their systems more. This has to come from somewhere.

The word "unlimited" is unfortunate, and most carriers are guilty of mis-using it. But-the previous posters are right, bandwidth isn't infinite, and limits (within reason) make the product more accessable for everyone.
As for charges for tethering are concerned, in a Free Enterprise society, companies have a right to charge for their services. As consumers, we need to make choices that best suit our needs. Is the best choice for each individual always there? No. This is why a competitive market is a good thing.

I guess not, I missed the part about tethering. All the other issued I'd had in the past with verizon blocking stuff seem to have been dealt with.
