Font Size on the 8700C
Please Login to Remove!
Hi....
I am a current 7290 user, and enjoy most aspects of it. But, the 8700C looks like a good upgrade path. I am waiting for my company to finalize their own 8700C SW build and the special pricing I would get ($199). Per my corporate Cingualr rep - that should just be a few weeks.
In the mean time, I finally saw a live unit at a local Cingular store. One thing I noticed, was that they did not seem to have the font size that I use on the 7290 - BBMillBank 6 Point. I like that font, as I like to maximize the use of the screen real estate. It looked like the 8700C only goes down to 8 point.
Did I miss something? Would someone be willing to confirm on their unit?
Assuming for the moment that I am correct - is there a way to request that RIM add the 6 point BBMillbank back into the SW? Does anyone know of a conatct point for that? It won't stop me from getting the unit, but it would make the experience just that much better.
BTW, I wanted to thank all of the posters. I have been following most of the threads from those who were fortunate enough to get a unit already. It is really helpful for the rest of us in making a buying decision. I will be sure to contribute anything that I am able also.
Have a great day.

It defaults to 8, but the picklist goes down to 7. I myself was thinking of changing it to 22, my eyes are going bad ;)

I just discovered the Bold function, and it REALLY looks sharp.

I use System font with size 6 on my 7290 and they are perfectly fine for me and when i got my 8700C I could not even find the size and font type. I hope RIM releases another version of handheld SW and address these issues. BB 8700 is a nice device but if they can make these minor changes then everyone is a happy camper.

Is anyone familiar with how to add sizes to an existing font? Specifically looking for a larger font size for the System font for a customer who is a Statistician (numbers have to line up.) Thanks!

With the new screen resolution, twice the number of pixels, and the screen not much larger than the 7290, I find that I didn't want the smaller font that I used on the 7290. I find that the 8 point font to be about the smallest I can comfortably use, where on the 7290 I used the smaller one.
Hope this helps.

OK - thanks all for the quick and helpful replies. I will still get the 8700C, and hopefully rcbjr is correct about the 8 point font being OK. It would still be nice to have the option, though. Does it actually take up any space to have the other point sizes available? I can not imagine it would be much, but I have no idea about that one. If, for some reason, the 8 pt. is still not enough, I will repost and see if I can get word to RIM to add the other sizes. THANKS!!!

Looks to me like my fonts go down to 7-point. I also used my 7290 at 6-point. The 8700 screen is so much clearer that 7-point is plenty small. Now I'm playing around with anti-aliasing. Not entirely necessary, but almost like a half-bold effect...
Definitely don't delay your 8700 purchase decision based on whether or not there is a 6-point font. There are so many usability improvements, it really is a great step up from the 7290...especially if you use it for both e-mail and phone...

Neat font trick
So I like the BBClarity font but wanted something smaller than size 7. Well through messing around I found a way to get a font size smaller than 7, I think it looks like a 6.
Steps:
1. Start w/ the clarity font and size 7
2. Change your current font to BBsystem, size 10 is the only option I believe
3. Save
4. Now change your font back to clarity and save, do not change the font size
You'll now see that the font is smaller than 7. Enjoy.

Awesome, I have been wondering about this forever. I stumbled on this little bug/feature a few months ago but never quite figured out that this was the way to get the special TINY font.
Your technique works great, I use BBcasual with antialiasing after the trick I can finally get the pixel density I want everytime! Thanks for posting this!

Nice trick, maybe something similar can help me?
Got my 8700c last week. Original configuration was the cingular theme, with system font set at size 10, although it was rendering much smaller at 6 or 7 (I liked it this small for ssh/telnet). I switched to another theme, and then back to the cingular theme, and now the identical settings render the font considerably larger. After phoning support, re-installing the system software, still can't get back to the original small font, but I know it's in the OS somewhere because the font was small to begin with (BB support blames Cingular for blocking the smaller fonts and says nothing can be done).
I have tried all the available settings for font family and size but nothing comes close to the font size originally rendered (it was about as small as could be and still be legible, like the inside of an "a" was about 1 or 2 pixels). The trick above seems to work for most of the bbxxx fonts (giving you a smaller than 7 size after setting to system 10 and back), but I want smaller still, something like system 7.
Any ideas?
