Default Installing BES - Please Help !!!

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

Am relatively new to BES.

I have got the BES for Exchange - Evaluation version from RIM.

Now I want to setup the BES environment. I have checked the installation documents provided on Blackberry website, but some are confusing.

Can someone help me getting following information .....

What all will I need to setup BES for Exchange ?????
- What S/w ?
- How many machines ? What s/w on each machine ?
- Etc. ?

Please help.

Thanks - Jay

You only need 1 machine. On that machine you will need the Exchange Management client for your Exchange version. For example, Exchange System Manager 2000 or 2003.
You will also need to copy the CDO.dll file from the Exchange Server to the system32 directory on the BES Server.

Thanks a lot for quick reply. But the issue is I dont have Exchange Server.

I am doing inhouse exploration withinh my company as part of our research and development activities. Hence, we have got this evaluation version as of now.

So I suppose, I will need two machines -

Machine 1 :: MS Exchange
Machine 2 :: BES and Exchange System Manager

Am I correct ?

Another thing - I dont have any connection to "Wireless Provider". Instead I plan to use Wi-Fi within my company premise to test over Blackberry device, that I will be procuring soon. In this case, what should I do for configuring the BES - as it asks for the SRP details ! ???

Thanks - Jay

Correct. You never want to run the BES on the same box the Exchange is on.

I don't know how the BES will connect to WiFi networks. Have you registered you SRP? If so TSupport can handle all those questions.

Are you saying that your company doesn't have an Internet connection?

So far as I know your BES won't work without an SRP regardless of whether you are using WiFi.

I have internet connection. But in BES Configurations .. It asks for SRP Authentication - Testing and I get following error message ...

ERROR: gethostbyname() failed for name srp.eu.blackberry.net: Valid name, no data record of requested type (11004)

? Can someone help here ?

To test a BES you need the SRP key. You should have gotten this from RIM with the CD/Download. The SRP is a unique key that validates you on the RIM network. Without it, the BES will not run.

If you plan on using WiFi, you will need the BlackBerry 7270. The 7270 is the only WiFi enabled device. The rest use carrier networks (i.e. GPRS, CDMA, iDEN).

You're in Europe?

Do you have a firewall or something that might be preventing your BES making a connection to srp.eu.blackberry.net on port 3101?

You should be allowed to call RIM for tech support during your trial.

Sounds like a DNS problem. Can you Ping srp.eu.blackberry.net?

From Microsoft:
Valid name, no data record of requested type.
The requested name is valid and was found in the database, but it does not have the correct associated data being resolved for. The usual example for this is a host name-to-address translation attempt (using gethostbyname or WSAAsyncGetHostByName) which uses the DNS (Domain Name Server). An MX record is returned but no A record—indicating the host itself exists, but is not directly reachable.

Error 11004 can be caused by the BES having to access the Network Access Node through a proxy server.

Try this on the BES server:

1. Open the Registry Editor.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Servers\<server_name>\NetworkAccessNode
3. Double-click NetworkAccessNode and enter the IP address of the proxy server in the Value data field.

I am not doing full-fledged implementation of BES ... I am just doing an inhouse evaluation. For the same, is it ok if I install BES and EXCHANGE on same box ?

Pls advice.

I shouldn't pose any serious problems for an Eval phase.

For an evaluation purpose - sure. If you deploy a BES I still don't recommend running both on the same box.

What are some of the reasons that the BES and Exchange server should be separate?

I'm looking at running 25 BB's/30 mailboxes/internal e-mail only and would prefer one box for cost, space and management reasons. It's hard enough to get this office to deal with the one file server box they currently have. I'd love to lump the BES and Exchange server with the file server on one box.
