The links can be found either on crackberry or here...just do a search on "tmobile storm" and you'll find lots of helpful threads.

At a high level:
Uninstall any previous versions on the PC, installed the OS I wanted, .148; then downloaded "swap a radio" and selected to replace the .148 radio with the .90 radio.

Once installed and after a couple of battery pulls, the EDGE stays on all the time for me now...no more drifting back and forth between edge/EDGE. It was driving me crazy but you'll feel good once you get this completed.

yes i did a clean install with jl_cmdr and then try to install it. i wanted to do the new OS with the .75 radio stack

This may help...
BlackBerry Apps/Hybrids by lyricidal

JSanders: Yes, .148 was working well but I did get frequent edge/EDGE scenarios, nothing long enough to frustrate me but noticed it enough to make the leap to .148/.90. So glad I did...

I also took some of the tips you provided in different threads regarding the APN settings and shutting down the connections and resetting. VERY GOOD STUFF...

Thanks again for all your input...

I LOVE MY TMO STORM!!!

Merk:

I like the .148 with the .90 radio...holds a solid EDGE connection all day long, which in turn allows me to surf the net and receive data with no problems.

I've used the 5.0.0.93 non hybrid and loved the additional 5.0xxx functionality but for some reason, did not hold EDGE consistently. I ended up downgrading to the .148/.90 hybrid because it held EDGE the best, which was more important to me than some of the 5.0 functionality...

Good luck...

Hey sanders you are right about the .148 it works perfect once in a while it will drop to lower case edge then 2 second later goes right back up and stays until I go into an area where is no good signal and in nj and ny that's hard to find . The os is in my opinion is almost perfect def more snappy and battery life is better and over all the keys are responding lot better . I am in a way glad I picked this up again . Thanks for the help and to all who gave some input .

Hi,

I am on .132 so I do not know if this applies to any later OS, I plan on trying .148 this coming weekend. But I have HAD the same problem with EDGE since I moved from .75. It seems the radio files above .90 cannot handle a TCP connection on an EDGE network. They CAN handle BIS or BES, just not TCP. I WAS using the .90 radio file up to release .132, but when I hit .132 my crashes increased exponentially. VSOD on each reboot. Freezes, crashes, etc. I hate the .90 radio file.

You can use a .132 radio file or higher AS LONG as you disable TCP and do NOT use software that tries to use your TCP connection.

Go into your Setup Folder or wherever you keep BB Options.
Choose
Advanced Options
TCP/IP
And turn it off/disable. I also have the incorrect info in there. Phone is Verizon, I am on Rogers. I just kept the default Verizon info.

Your EDGE connection will stay constant. I have a strong feeling this will be the same with .148. I really do not want to go back to .90. .90 is not JUST the radio, but the platform and it does many other functions which really always made my Storm unreliable. On .132 radio my Storm is what I always thought it should be and it keeps its EDGE, as long as I do not try a TCP connection. I am hoping that .148 will be even better.

Most applications will not even try a TCP connection, though some can and will. The few I have that can use a TCP connection usually try it when they self configure when first run. I usually always lose my EDGE when this happens. What I then do is go into the options of the app in question, find the network configuration option and tell it to use BIS, not TCP. This only has to be done once, not each time you run it. (Though after each OS install I have had to reconfigure the app to only use BIS), but how often do you install an OS?

I had to do this for Vlingo for sure. Each time it tried to self configure it would bring down EDGE. When it was half done, I went in changed the self configure to manual config and use BIS. Then the rest worked out no problem.

It will limit what apps you can use, but the following all work for me:
Email - all accounts and PINing. I even sent and received a 2MB file.
Text messaging
BB Browser and BOLT brower
Viigo
Facebook
podtrapper
Poynt
Vlingo
WeatherBug
WeatherEyeTouch
Shazam
Google Maps
BlackBerry Maps
Storm Forums app
RDM+
App World

Without any issues at all.

I have been able to upload and download very large files (>1mb) and browse any number of web pages. I get all my email, pins, sms, Facebook and weather updates for Weather Bug and WeatherEye.

I had way too many problems with .90, VSODs, freezes, crashes. With the .90 radio file on .132 each time I rebooted my Storm I usually had to reboot another 3-5 times just to get EDGE to work. So as long as you do not need a TCP connection, I think your better off using the current radio file.

I have been running like this for about 1 month now. I think I have lost my EDGE connection once in that time. And I was able to recover in minutes by just stopping the network and starting it again. That is one loss in like 4 weeks.

Allan

hey Project let me clear up somethings a little. there are many type of networks as you are aware.

CDMA= VERIZON NETWORK
GSM/GPRS/EDGE/3G= ATT TMOBILE and a load of other.

the storm has the ablity to work on CDMA and GSM "AKA" EDGE when you are over seas you will most likely be on a GSM network because CDMA is really noy used alot over seas.

the differance with EDGE and edge is this. when the word EDGE is in CAPS that means you have a full data connection your emails and internet are working. when the word edge is lower case you phone works but no data is coming in. i maybe wrong but that what i see and i have tested my phone with emails when the EDGE is caps the email came with in a 5 sec's . when its lower case edge emails wont be sent as quick or at all.

if you have any questions please ask . somes times reading something does not make things clear been there done that.

Correct.

GSM and EDGE will transport data.

gprs and edge, will not.
