I am having exceptional difficulty loading this into the device. First, does the battery need to be in? The DM keeps telling me "A fatal error has occurred while updating your device's software. Please try again." What next?

Thumbs up thanks for the tips

i've got BB 8820 with os4.5 on and this works perfectly. previously tried the well documented way of replacing policy.bin but there were still remnants. what really pi$$ed me off was the password expiry plus references to IT policy still sometimes. now all that is in the past. thank you once again.

All,

As I posted above a few days ago, I have wiped my OS with JL_Cmder, and every time I try to download a new version of the OS (4.5 I think) I get an error. Should I retry to wipe the OS again? Could there be any remaining data left on the Blackberry that stands in the way of the new download? Any help from you experts would be greatly appreciated!

Is your device showing a 507 error? What error are you getting when you try to download the OS?

Yes, I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that. It is a 507 error. This number lies below an icon with a line though it.

That indicates there is no OS on the device. What happens when you try to install the new OS?

I get a fatal error message that it could not be downloaded. I have wnet to a couple of sites, including this one, to make sure I was following the procedure EXACTLY the way its described. Each time, I get the same message: "fatal error has occurred while updating your device software. Please try again"

Hmm, try rebooting your PC and then try again. Also, make sure you're not connected to a USB hub. You may want to try different USB ports on your PC as well.

I am connected to a USB hub. So I understand your recommendation correctly, you suggest connecting directly to the PC?

Yes, connect the device directly to a port on the PC.

just tried again and the Blackberry Desktop couldn't seem to recognize the device. Another interesting thing happened. The Desktop Manager asked me for the devices security code, the same thing I am trying to get rid of! How could that be if I have erased the OS from the device?

Don't use DM, use Loader.exe to load the OS. Also, just doing a wipe of the device will not remove the IT policy if there's one on the device. You will need to use ResetToFactory option in JL_Cmder.

The advantage of doing this is lost on me. Aren't the java utilities handled automatically?

have tried searching for this answer but had no luck. Am trying to use jl cmder to wipe my bold, but I have been stuck for half an hour on the red screen saying "connecting to device" and on the device the picture is of a battery with a line through it. Why is it stuck??

I have this exact same problem.

I tried to update my BB File Scout last night when my handset reset part way through and it has been stuck in a never ending reset routine ever since. Many battery pulls etc have not sorted it. It's not even making it back into the os when it resets. Just restarts part way through the boot up

I'd resorted to using JL Cmder on it but I can't even get that to work now.
