Hmmm very interesting. You aren't the first person I have heard of that had the device crap out after having a mysterious message indicator come on.

The RIM Conspiracy continues.... lol

Very strange indeed. Both my Storm and my wifes Curve did the same thing over the weekend. The message light goes solid and the phone freezes. It only happen once and not at the same time (but same day). In both cases a battery pull solved the problem.

I am new to Verizon. My family had been loyal customers of another company for like ...a loooooooong time! Thus far Verizon has them beat by a long shot!

So much for them being a "singular" sensation." Sorry, I couldn't help the pun!!! LOL

These are *observations* and are subject to change. Typically when I discover what I think may be an issue, I test it in someone of a controlled environment, if possible.

1. CLOSE your applications when done. If you hit the (Back) button, it keeps the application open in memory. Do this with enough apps or with certain apps and you'll be pulling your battery in no time.

Holding down your Blackberry button will show you what apps you have open.

2. Be careful with Google Latitude. I've noticed that when it is on, it eats the battery away. I've also had to pull the battery several times after using it. It's a fun feature, but not necessary. Also, after pulling the batter check your apps to see if Google Maps auto loaded. Make sure you - Exit and Suspend Sharing.

3. Leaving YouTube open (not closing it as stated above) may cause battery drain issues.

4. Using BlackBerry App World. It's so bad, sometimes I think just looking at it makes my phone slow down.

Corrections and more tips to come in the future.
I leave GoogleMaps with Latitude on all the time, and my battery life is great. I also have serveral other apps open (that work with 5.0.0.140) and I can go 1.5 days on a single charge, even with receiving couple of phone calls, browsing the web, texting and using BBM.

Greetings, I'm new here (this forum AND Storm World). I have twice had the red message light go solid, always on; no unopened messages in the boxes, nor did it shut down - so far! Bothe times I just shut the phone off and back on, solved the light...anybody know what causes it?

I had the same thing, and figured out that it was related to a message that I got from AppWorld that there was a new version. This happened once last week, and once over the weekend. I did the same as you the first time (batt pull) and it disappeared. Then when it happened again this past weekend, I went to every folder in the menu looking for anything out of the ordinary. I finally found a notification icon resting on top of AppWorld. Opening AppWorld, and reading the message that there was an update available turned off the light without a batt pull. Weird that the light stayed solid rather than blinking as it does when I get any other type of notification (message, WBug, missed call, etc...), but it never impacted performance.
