The EU is either in the process of, or will soon be, requiring common charging ports across all mobile devices sold in EU countries. Micro-USB is the standard that is currently selected. So, it makes sense for hardware manufacturers to fall in line as soon as possible - and wag the dog - economies of scale means this change will affect devices no matter the market they're bound for.
Personally, I like it already. My Motorola headsets all use it, my iPhone external battery pack uses it, etc. One car charger, one travel charger, etc.
Makes sense for me, makes sense for the environment, most of all, makes sense for my wallet.
