Extremadura's new sex ed program for young people is, well, educational.
Spanish region takes hands-on approach to sex education
Dunno how I feel about this, as a parent.

Poor naive government officials. Have they browsed the internet? Do teenagers need some government campaign for help?

I'm kind of going back and forth between enlightenment and a stupid waste of taxpayer money.
My other thought is 'this needs to be taught?'

My only comment on this one:
If some guy was doing this in his garage, he'd be a pervert.
If the government does it, it's ok?
Puhleeze.

No no! I think you may have misunderstood. i didn't mean that it was a bad thing.. techniques being taught and basically conducting workshops by the government is a big no no. that's what i meant

I'm kinda half and half with this one. I mean, I do belief that there's a lot of families that simply don't want to get into that stuff with their kids, and probably think they should be a bit older than "14-17". I mean its not specifically saying these youngins will be sexually active but I believe masterbation is probably a gateway to becoming sexually active just as marijuana is commonly perceived as a gateway to harder drugs...

i don't think it's the question of age or anything. the question here lies in whether you should be taught techniques by the government. i don't think it's OK to have workshops that TEACH you techniques. somehow it just seems so...icky.

Well, I can't speak for the Spanish government, they may have more sense... but I certainly don't think the U.S. government should be teaching young people sex techniques. This is a group of people who put out 5,000+ page reports about everything they encounter, but who refuse to actually interact with the public in anything other than sound bites and PowerPoint. I mean, picture the people who brought you things like the Oliver North hearings and the Food Pyramid trying to instruct young people about masturbation.
Further, because all campaigns need an age-appropriate theme song, they will buy the rights to the Hokey Pokey, and summer camps everywhere will have to find something less suggestive to sing and dance to.

^ ok, i see the Hokey Pokey in a completely new light now. heh.
Secondly, i don't think ANY government should encourage teaching of self pleasure techniques. Go ahead, have the sex-ed classes, and have the birds and bees talk, but i see something not quite right about the teaching by the govt.
having said that..did you know that India, from being the country with the whole 'sex before marriage' being a definite no, is completely the opposite? most kids can't wait to 'jump the sack'.

Lol. I don't think this phenomenon is cultural. I think it's biological.

I disagree, If its not about age.. Do you think we would even be having this discussion if they were having classes for people 25-30 years of age teaching teh same things. With that being said this situation is very sensitive due to the age factor..

After some thought - and all joking aside - I don't agree with this idea.
First, it's a waste of valuable resources. Young people have discovered these things on their own since mankind's inception. Practically speaking, this is a classic case of a solution that has no corresponding problem.
Second, in the case of the U.S., this is completely outside the scope of government as outlined by our constitution.
And finally, yes, as a parent it creeps me out a little. I want my son and stepchildren to be comfortable with their own bodies, but I also want them to have a healthy respect for not only the act of sex, but also its private and sacred nature. My government is limited in its ability to convey any sort of values by the required separation of church and state.
