9700 has become 'sluggish'...
Please Login to Remove!
What did I do? Lately, over the past few weeks, I've noted my BB9700 has become slow to respond to key commands. For example, if I am in my email folder, and want to back out to the main screen, then go to my SMS folder, there can be a three to five second delay when the phone becomes unresponsive. Then it runs through the commands in quick succession. I also keep the keypad locked a lot of the time. Hitting the unlock button can leave the phone in limbo for at least as long. Then, wondering if I hit it at all, I end up relocking the phone! I don't really know of a particular app or setting I have changed. After a battery pull it is very snappy but throughout the day it slows. I am running 423 and memory hovers around 112 mb. I was thinking about trying out the latest release. This has really become annoying, because I hit a key twice thinking I didn't press it hard enough--like the camera-- and then both commands get issued and then I'm all over the place. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a possible memory problem. Did the device get wet?

did you install any apps right before the problem started? some apps can cause it to run sluggish. i installed beweather and had a lot of lag for a few days until i finally uninstalled it and the lag went away

Clear Event Log
You might want to try clearing the Event Log, it always helps my performance issues. From the main menu hold the ALT key down select "L" than "G" twice. the event log will appear, select menu and than clear log.

No water damage at all, and no recent apps I can recall. Did delete the last one I installed, but I don't think it started after that one. Also performed the event log purge, Alt, LG,LG. Reboot. I'll see how it performs at work now.

I had lag problems almost as bad as yours and it turned out to be a theme I was using. I reverted to the default T-mobile theme and now it's snappy again.

UPDATE: Solved?
Sunday morning I upgraded to the latest OS: v5.0.0.442. Now it is as responsive as before! No pauses, yet... I thought maybe it was my regular use of the lock/unlock key, but so far even after repeated lock and unlocks, no sign the 9700 has slowed down again. Wonder if something in the old OS was screwed up somehow? I did note a slight increase in memory with the new platform...

black 9700 has 250 MB flash and bold 9000 has 1 GB. I am not sure why they downgraded.

tmel173 - The 9700 has 256MB of flash memory, while the 9000 has only 128MB of flash memory. Flash is the memory that the BB O/S can use for apps - so 9000 has half as much. Except it's worse than that - the O/S takes up so much of the memory that there is less than 30MB left on a 9000 for Apps (and your device will slow down if you use up much more than half of this) - while 9700 has over 100MB free for apps.
The rest of the 1GB internal memory in a 9000 cannot be used for apps, so I'm not sure how it's any better than micro SD card memory.
BlackBerry - BlackBerry | Wireless Handheld Devices, Software & Services from Research In Motion (RIM)
I think RIMM does a poor job of communicating this - there has been much confusion about this esoteric point - though not so esoteric for someone who wants to install more than a small handful of apps. You're not likely to run out of memory for apps any time soon on a 9700, though perhaps a couple years from now bigger apps will be the norm and 256MB won't seem like much.

Do you have any LBS applications running? -- I have noted that these applications, such as Google Maps, or other Location Based Services kill performance... and battery.
