Default Groupwise Address Book

Please Login to Remove!

I have a problem where a user just told me their AB isn't fully populated with her frequent contacts folder. Since then she has manually added new contacts to the BB only. What is the best way to get those new ones out of the BB and into frequent contacts in GW?

What address book do you have selected for this user? Go into the user's Properties, select PIM Sync and what address book is selected?

The Frequent contacts AB. They don't match up. This has apparently been this way and has just came up for this user

Check the GWPA log for that user which will show the address book that is syncing, the DB count (BES supported contacts) and the GW count (total GW AB contacts including groups and orgs which arent BES supported). With that said we don't allow our users to sync Freq Contacts. It's a mess of an address book, dynamic in nature and it can hold mistyped addresses and become quite large. I think I've seen a RIM doc where they don't recommend syncing FCs as well.

Another angle would be to reset the phone's book if your user is happy with the FC AB in GroupWise. To do so Address Book>Options>General, roll over Desktop but don't open it and type 'rset'

We don't allow FC to be synchronized to the BlackBerry as well. What I tell all my users that are given a BlackBerry to do is to create a new address book called Wireless and then move all of their contacts they want available on their device to that address book. That helps keep it consistent across the board.

We were kind of chapped that we couldn't sync multiple address books as we did with Notifylink and GW Mobile server on the BES. But now that our users have gotten used to that I almost don't want multiple books so as admin I don't have to deal with that.

RIM does not recommend that the user subscribed to Frequent Contacts Address Book as it will create unnecessary server load due to its dynamic nature. Make sense. Just to share......

<snip>
Setting the Frequent Contacts address book in Novell GroupWise to synchronize with the BlackBerry smartphone is not recommended.

When a Novell GroupWise user sends an email message, Novell GroupWise modifies the appropriate contact in the Frequent Contacts address book. This causes unnecessary wireless data traffic.

A personal Address Book can be assigned for synchronization with the BlackBerry smartphone. For instructions on adding a personal Address Book to synchronize with the BlackBerry smartphone, see KB03763.

I will have them start syncing with their named AB or create a new one.

Here is typical scenario:
1-User wants corporate BB and moving from flip phone.
2-Go to verizon store and have the contacts added to new BB
3-Enterprise Activate on BES at office - No PIM sync is chosen and wireless activation is off in BB.
4-Later, user wants to sync with GW contact folder.
5-Choose folder and it overwrites contacts in BB. true or false?
6-Now user is mad

If I backit up and add back it creates this unknown AB folder under desktop. this is confusing.
thanks

It shouldn't overwrite the contacts in the address book. It should add to them.

jsconyers is right in that it should merge the contacts. There are some third party apps out there that do a nice job of exporting cell phone contacts into a GW address book which allows for easier and more timely cleanup which might be helpful.

We've had several higher ups in our org carry both a cell and a BB (both corp owned) that finally decom'ed the cell and moved the # over to the BB. When the contacts were pulled off the cell and into the BB it caused major issues with the synced address book as you'd see a Joe Smith with only a phone # from the cell, and a Joe Smith with an email, phone and whatever else in the GW AB/BB. Since GW sees the former Joe Smith contact first due to the search order finding the non-email contact first you'd get an 'ambiguous user' error when trying to send to that contact in GW. Those users (or usually their subs) wind up having to clean up their GW AB so that each contact is correct and not duped.
