So last night I went to bed and I was not at home so I could not charge my phone. It had more than half of its power left, so I just left it on overnight and this morning it was completely dead, its charging from zero right now. Anyone know why this might happen? It has neever happened before.

You had applications in the background that drained the batt. Rather common.

Ah ok thanks. First blackberry, got it a couple days ago. Is there any way to ensure no apps are running?

Sure, make sure you press the BlackBerry button and properly exit the apps when you're done with them. If you navigate out of apps using the back button it keeps them running in the background eating on your batt.

Ditto.
Also note that some apps that will run in the background have an 'exit' and a 'close'. Figure out for the particular app what does what so you know you are indeed shutting it down and not just sending it into background.

You can hold down the berry button and scroll to see what is running. Apps like homescreen, messages, phone, and a few others are always running. Others should be closed to save battery

Hah! I've still been doing alt-esc to see the ribbon. Holding down the blackberry key is cool.

Holding down the blackberry key is very helpful. One thing I donr get though, is how apps are still draining the battery when the phone is turned off! This happened again to me last night because I was sure that it would close and running apps.

You said in your first post that you left the device on because the charge indicator was still at about 50%. Are you now saying the battery even runs down overnight when the blackberry is powered off? Full power off and it still runs down over night?
You can't close blackberry messenger. That, the browser, messages, phone, etc. are always running.

Yes the first night the device was on with 50 percent power. Last night, the charge was almost full and I turned the phone right off and the battery still drained. I did have an alarm set for this morning though if that means anything

First, there is 'off' and then there is 'full power off'. You should be prompted if you use the power off icon to shut down the blackberry. Off is not fully off; hence the alarm app is allowed to continue running and activate at the sett time. But I don't know what else is still active when off as opposed to full off.
I would do an experiment. Charge your battery to 100% -- if it will indeed take a full charge. Then remove the battery and leave it on your nightstand over night. Put it in the device in the morning and see if it still has a full or nearly full charge. Make a test phone call to your office voicemail or something for a coupple minutes and see what that does to your charge level.
If your battery is still charged in the morning and the test phone call doesn't cause an unusual drop, then it would seem the battery is good and the problem, whatever it is, is with the device. If that's the case, I would charge the battery again, do a full power off, and check the battery in the morning. If the battery is drained, I would suspect a hardware problem. But that's me. See what others say.
