"Mobile Network" settings?

I'm on a Verizon Bold2 9650. Looking through my phone's settings with an eye towards enhancing battery life (not an issue as some are reporting, but every little bit helps), under "Mobile Network" there is a Network Technology: drop-down with 3 options: "Global", "1XEV" and "GSM/UMTS", with the default setting of "Global".
Can someone please use small words and explain the difference between them to me? I know (I think) that 1XEV is Verizon's way of saying 3G (which the phone now displays next to the antenna bars, instead of 1XEV like my Tour showed), but what are the other settings for?
Is "Global" just that, so I can use the phone on non-U.S. networks? I rarely leave northeast Ohio, and haven't been outside the U.S. in a couple of years. Or should I just say the heck with it and ignore everything?
Thanks...
