Default Version Question - Can BES Users Upgrade On Their Own?

Please Login to Remove!

Greetings all,

I am in the process of downloading tools from RIM which include the BlackBerry Simulator (not sure if I need it or not to do web app simulation).

I am being prompted for the version. There are lots of them. I know I am on 4.61. We are planning on building a booking tool for the average corporate BlackBerry user who will most likely be tethered to a BES.

Question: Can the average BB user upgrade their operating system to something later (like 5.0 or 6.0) without the BESAdmin pushing it out?

I want to be reasonable in what I use so as to not put off 80% of the users out there.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Best,

Paul

Moved to the proper section.

I think the BES Admin has to be involved, especially to reactivate the device on the BES, but I will defer to one of our Admins for the correct response.

We have users at our company that do upgrade their phones on their own. They on occasion need us to reactivate them on the server. This however can be controlled by policy, if you want to allow them to upgrade their device.

The upgrade has nothing to do with the ability of your users, average or not. As already stated, you control OTA updates by policy. Policy is either on or off, no in between. You'll need to decide how to control this. You could enable two policies to your users, one which allows upgrades and one that does not.

If you do go the OTA route, you'll need to jump through additional hoops. The OTA version will need to be carrier approved and the current version that your device will be upgraded from will also need to be the version your carrier put on their to begin with. If you follow these steps, you will not need to have the user reactivate. Good luck.
