Lost Blackberry Help Please!
Please Login to Remove!
Hi everyone, great forum here!
I lost my Blackberry 8300 on New Year's Day in a cab. Slipped outta the pocket...
After calling it for several hours with no response, I called up my carrier to cancel the service. The phone was also very low on battery at the time.
Now here's my question:
I had private information on there: contacts, memos, texts. And no password. Since I cancelled the service, does that do anything to wipe the information on my phone if someone were to find it? Or say, if the phone died before anyone found it, would it be wiped if they ever got it working again? After being dead for awhile, would a Blackberry reboot?
Thanks guys! Hope everyone is having a great new year!

Nope. Nope. If charged, yes.

Thanks for the help!
So, if someone finds my dead Blackberry in a week and somehow charges it -- it would not contain any of my old info?

There is no remote wiping app/service by default. You would have had to install it prior to losing it. Since you say above you have no password, all someone has to do is charge it and they will have access to your data.
Not sure what you mean by "would a blackberry reboot".
Important future lesson = Set the device password.

I meant to say wipe, my bad.
Thanks for all your help guys. I guess I'll be more security conscious in the future!

Re: Lost Blackberry Help Please!
The info is still there, even if the battery goes dead, and (in your case) accessible when the device is charged.

Well, hopefully whoever finds my dead Blackberry with no service won't think much of it. What's the worst that could happen?

Re: Lost Blackberry Help Please!
Well, depends on what info is there, and what your idea is of a bad outcome.... A BlackBerry could contain names, addresses, birth dates, phone numbers, maybe some of those details you sometimes need like your spouse's ssn last four, and then dates and time you won't be home.... maybe enough for a thief to steal your identify, or the identity of someone in your address book, or break into your home because he knows the address where no one will be home for a few days because the resident is on vacation or a business trip.

Well, luckily there isn't much in the way of information except names and phone numbers. What's done is done. I'll just be more careful in the future.
But it is nice to see such a supportive, helpful community here!

Re: Lost Blackberry Help Please!
Password is the smart thing to do with the next BlackBerry. Change the time out depending on the environment (home/office versus travel or night on the town). And lock the device manually ahead of those times like taxi or subway rides when you need to.
And put your contact info (and ICE info) on the owner screen. If I found your BlackBerry I would mail it to you if I had the address. Hopefully the person who finds you next BlackBerry will at least call you.
Good luck.
