Thumbs down Three (UK) - Blackberry Pearl 9105 - £5/month for BIS? WTF!

Please Login to Remove!

Ordered my first ever BB from Three yesterday, The Pearl 3G 9105 - I work from home and purchased it purely to send/receive emails and browse the web when in the house but away from the computer.

Just received it, its a a cracking little phone UNTIL I went to setup my personal email account! I then found that you have to pay £5 per month to activate 'Blackberry Internet Services'

Once you've activated your SIM and topped up you'll need to activate BlackBerry Internet Service so you can use email, the internet and BlackBerry Messenger. BlackBerry Internet Service costs £5 and lasts up to 30 days.
Please tell me this is not true! who's bright idea was that? I really don't see why I should pay Three for the privilege of using my own email account, on my own phone, over my own WiFi connection

The £5 a month is to setup your Blackberry Internet Services - you are paying for the connection between your phone and the Blackberry servers.

You can read more here about why you need a blackberry data plan - What do I need a Data Plan for? - BlackBerryFAQ

I don't want to use the Blackberry servers, I want to use my own email server, on my own phone and over my own Internet Connection. Another member of the household has a Nokia E71 which retails for £100 less than the Blackberry that can do this

If you've only just got it, send it back. I assume Three have a returns policy.

Not to be unsympathetic, but it appears that the OP failed to do some preliminary research. I suspect that a return is your best option.

Three charge £5 for BIS which icludes unlimited email and 2gb internet browsing so its the same price as the internet add on they offer for none blackberry users.......so not a rip off whatsoever......

I am with 3uk and also have a 9105 which so far after 3 weeks is proving to be the best phone i have had for years....

I had been swept away by the 'tech' of all these new smartphones with 'apps' galore (android, iphone although i dont like the whole iphone trend thing and never owned one) but realised one day that my primary uses/and need of my mobile is in order;

1) emails on the move
2) calls and texts
3) A battery that lasts more than 24 hours!!!
4) GPS sat Nav.

and thats it, I dont need an APP that tells me where a good pub is, i know where good pubs are, i dont need an app that tells me when a film is on etc etc etc...if you do fair enough, i dont........

The 9105 is fairly cheap the battery lasts the Wifi is superb in terms of minimal power usage...and the email is superb, reliable and small in terms of data size.....

I did my research, it looks like you didnt......

Keep in mind that it is best to keep the battery "topped" off rather than let it run down. Going below 20% can actually damage the battery.

The good news for the OP is that he no longer needs any other data plan with his carrier. Just the BIS plan. And for £5 per month its the most reasonable data plan around.
