I'm using a bb8900. I found that the software was v4.6.1.199. I know that the most current software is v5 and with the help of various how-to's online i attempted to upgrade the software. Downloaded a v5 software and installed it to my pc and deleted the vendor.xml file. Now is where i'm in a little jam, when i turn on my bb desktop software i find that there is no option to upgrade the software which i installed so i used the application loader instead however the application loader does not even show my current software of version 4.6.

Can someone tell me what's going on or if i'm doing something wrong?

If you did then you would be able to upgrade to v5...
RIM made it much more difficult to upgrade without a BlackBerry Data Plan.
