Hello.

I'm a network administrator and the company have just purchased some blackberries. They would like to use them with our server.

Now I know some people have just put the username and password and accessed the emails with no software on the server but I have read about BES and its installation process.

My question is, do we need it? I know it is free, but what can be accessed with BES express that cannot when simply adding the email details?

We are on SBS2011 which contains MS Exchange 2010 SP1.

Thank you!

BES is far from free. It will give you control over the devices that access your system but you have to buy user licenses (Cals) for each user. My old company simply used the OWA method of accessing the Exchange server and it worked well.

Are we talking about the same program? Under Blackberry Enterprise Server express, it states "No additional software or user license fees"

Am I misunderstanding?

Thanks. BlackBerry - End User Resources

Can anyone point me toward where I can read about the security risks involved in connecting users via OWA, or the additional benefits of connecting via BESX? Thank you.

BES 5 Express is free, with free SRP and CALs for up to 10000 users 2k users per BES server. It does work with BIS and allows more control that EAS including remote wipe. over 75 IT policy entries can be used to make users comply with passwords, apps, browsing and more.

BIS with OWA offers nothing cept for email. no wipe, no controls.
