Anytime I have WiFi turned on, I get the icon in the upper right corner. However, when I walk into work there is also a WiFi icon in the middle of the status bar right beside the email and voice mail indicator. I do not see a description of this icon. I do not get it at other locations (like my home) when on WiFi. The other thing is that my battery gets drained at work. I wonder if this icon means there is communications constantly going on due to our work WiFi (an enterprise network by the way).

It apparently is an alert that the BlackBerry detects a hotspot within range. I don't know exactly why the icon shows sometimes and sometimes not.

As far as battery, turn wifi and bluetooth off when you are not using.
