First go into add/remove programs and remove 4.0 Second C: Drive--> Programs --> Common Files --> Research In Motion --> AppLoader and remove the Vendor.xml file, then run the desktop manager it should prompt you to downgrade if not run application loader and that should enable the downgrade of the OS.

You need to get hold of a DOS utility called JavaLoader (can be found in the sdk on the www.blackberry.com/developers area. Run that with the wipe switch (just run javaloader.exe for options), and it will remove all software from your BlackBerry showing 507 on the Handheld. Then remove any 4.0 software from your system and run application loader and install the older software.

I'm not sure, but I would think you could to http://vzw.smithmicro.com/blackberry/ and download 3.7 for your handheld, and install that. But I've never tried it.

To downgrade put the vendor.xml file back.

I originally had 3.8 and downloaded the HK 4.0. I could never get it to upgrade until I renamed (I never delete a file) the vendor.xml to verdor.xml.old.

I then fired up the the application loader and the upgrade was avilable.

To downgrade. I renamed the vendor.xml.old back to vendor.xml. Fired up application loader and the downgrade option was displayed.

I successfuly upgraded and downgraded this way..

Make sure you have the Handheld OS software installed on your PC for both versions.

I have the following directory structure:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\7290-v3.8.0.139_P1.8.0.99

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\7290-v4.0.0.185_P1.8.0.117

My vendor.xml file is located here:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\vendor.xml

Download and install Desktop Manager 3.6 from the RIM support web site

Download and install Handheld Manager 3.7 from http://vzw.smithmicro.com/blackberry

Connect the BB to the PC BUT DO NOT START DESKTOP MANAGER

PM me and I will send you "Javaloader"

After you get Javaloader, unzip it and put it in a known location (like C: ) so you can find it.

Open a DOS prompt - Start / Run / cmd

c:
cd \
javaloader -usb wipe

After it is done, type exit

Start Desktop Manager. It should reload now.
