Called Customer service and they said they could not do an upgrade over the phone; I would have to go to a store. Called store and they said that it my cost for an 8700 would be 479 w/no contract, 429 w/1yr, and 349 w/2yr.

Is this the right pricing, and why can't they do an upgrade over the phone?
That makes now sense to me.

I have been with them since Jan of '06, previsouly nextel since '02.

You were quoted the correct prices, at least for now. They don't upgrade over the phone because they ...don't want to be bothered with shipping? Or maybe because the operators are in Bangladesh? Who knows. You can get the unit cheaper from a retailer such as www.Amazon.com or www.ushopwireless.com. You can also try mall kiosks. Vendors buy the units wholesale and sell them at a discount. Many people have upgraded by phone for less. See the T-Mobile thread in this forum. You have to be persistent and insist on a lower price. You should end up paying between 150 and 200 with renewal. I myself got 200 with 2 year renewal, but at least one person managed 150 with a 1 year renewal. Good luck!

Probably because you are just a new subscriber. Your eilligibility to upgrade a new device (a hot one at that) is slim if you are not a subscriber with them for 6 months. If you will, they will not give you a good price rate because they base the discount solely on that criteria.

I tried doing upgrade with my latest phone line that I just added to my personal account and can't even upgrade and was told to wait. So I used my other phone lines that are not in contract to get my 8700g.
