Default Microsoft update affects BB email - how?

Please Login to Remove!

This story appeared today. What does it mean for BIS users who send email showing a different "from" address?

"Microsoft plans to release two security updates tomorrow for its Windows operating system and a single patch for Exchange.
The release is part of the software giant's regular patch cycle on the second Tuesday of each month.

At least one of the Windows updates has a severity rating of critical, as does the planned patch for Exchange. The Windows update may require a system reboot, Microsoft said in a security bulletin.

The Exchange patch will tighten the application's default e-mail settings, making it harder for users to send messages from mail boxes that are not their own.

Microsoft is attempting to limit e-mail address spoofing, where the "from" address is different from the actual address where the message originated.

The change will affect users of e-mail mobile devices such as the BlackBerry as well as e-mail addresses that are used by groups of users.

The update will be available for download from Microsoft's Web site and through the auto-update features built into Microsoft's products."

It affects BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) users only. If you have a BIS account, there won't be any worries. Microsoft *claims* that this was per customer request, however considering their own KB article lists ONLY BlackBerry Enterprise Server and GoodLink specifically as two known affected applications, I just have to wonder if this is not just another one of their anti-competition tricks...

From KB 912918:

This issue is known to affect the following third-party products:
xxx8226; Research In Motion (RIM) Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES)
xxx8226; Good Technology GoodLink Wireless Messaging

I have several domains. I usually use a differen "from" address for two purposes 1. spam 2, sorting. In both cases I am not lying. I don't spam and don't want spam. If possible I try not to use Microsoft mail or Internet explorer. Unfortunately others do.

This story is on BBHub.

"A little later on this morning, Microsoft will release a patch for Exchange that may prove to be a pain in the you-know-where for BlackBerry users.

The patch is going to tighten Exchange's default email settings, making it more difficult for users to send messages from mail boxes that are not theirs.

This remedy is supposed to be a counter-spoofing strategy, but there's a catch for BlackBerry users.

Many BB users who use BlackBerry Internet Service as their default email client work with a different from address than the one used by BIS to receive and send email.

It will be interesting to watch the reaction among BlackBerry users when this patch becomes public."

Jibi, is the story off-base?

My reply:

A BIS user's interaction with their email has NOTHING to do with Exchange or the 'Send As' patch that is now available from Microsoft. This patch ONLY affects BES users that are using Exchange 2000/2003 as their mail platform. The BIS user's reply-to address never will touch an Exchange environment - you could use [email address] as your BIS reply-to address and not have a single issue as it would NEVER touch Microsoft's mail servers.
