My brother is on BES with M. Lynch. He claims they have disabled his abilty to SMS, respond to PIN messages and add or remove any apps from his BB...I did not know they could do any of that..

I think my brother may be clueless and just believing what the tech idiots there tell him

what do you guys think...

Yes they can, that is a good reason why a personal BB does not belong in a BES environment, if it is a company BB he is SOL. Nothing that he can do about it, it is done for security reasons and they have every right to do so.

I believe he is correct. You can set and/or disable all kinds of things through policy from BES to the handhelds.

Your bro is pwned by "the man" dude. Doesn't matter if it's his bberry or the companies bberry, they push out a policy onto it and he's a goner.

well, it is his own blackberry, but it's on their BES...Can I at least upgrade his OS with no problems?

I guess 3rd party apps are out..What if he deregisteres from the BES and then adds the apps and then re registers with the BES?

to remove the policy you need to go through a fairly lengthy process, which is doable. As far as I know though, if IT is smart enough they will be able to see what v. software he's running.

It's possible IT is keeping the bberries on a specific build for a reason, for example, so it could flag if he upgrades... at which case he may become a liability and get in serious doo doo.

My advice to him, get a friend in IT (at M. Lynch). It's the best thing you can ever do at a company. We're the window to all things wild and crazy.

I would upgrade him. ML should have all their BB's upgraded anyway. And as far as 3rd party apps Bes Admin's cant really touch those unless they turn off some http connection which would be silly for them to worry about stuff like that. i'm an admin for 1000 BB's and i tell ya i do not have the time to worry about people and 3rd party aps or PIN msg. PIN's arent loggable until you get to 4.1 bes upgradethat might be why they block those. ERON syndrome i think.

best of luck. If I were you though, I'd let him know that him changing stuff on his bberry outside of IT policies is something that, should ML ever do an audit, is going to flag.

I'm sure his comp is the same as ours in doing employee audits every year.

At that point it comes down to how trusting he feels the company is. Auditors have a way of being really uppity over stupid things.

You or I might not see a problem, but you might be putting him in undo risk by simply doing something outside of proper protocol.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry7100i/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/103)

Interesting that you'd post your question on a site that has a lot of BES admins, refer to is as 'tech idiots' and then ask for help.

Your brother is SOL the term 'let the buyer beware comes to mind'. It is very doubtful the 'tech idiots' will allow him off and then back on the BES. I wouldn't. I'd let him off and let him stay off.

Relax dude, fact is most people who have a job, do not know how to do it. So it's a fair assumption that the people that set him up are not the most tech savy people out there...
