I called Cingular today to switch to the new 29.99 BIS. Fine, I could do that with no problem. However, the rep asked me "what do you want to do about the International Data that you have" I told him that I wanted to keep the International Data (around 20 bucks). He said that there was no code for this and that the new International Data plan would go up to 35 Bucks. 29.99 + 35.00 is then going to be 65 dollars. The same total that I pay now on the old Data price plan.

Anyone out there on the 29.99 BIS and the International Data plan? You able to get the REAL price drop?

Cingular really didn't think this through. I've called three times and cannot get a rep to aclnowledge that the 29.99 BIS plan exists. You ought to be able to add international for $20. Cingular is a mess. I am thinking of moving my BB to T-Mobile.

I'm certainly no expert, but ...

As a Cingular rep explained it to me -- prior to the new $30 BIS plan -- there was a $45 domestic unlimited data plan and a $65 international unlimited data plan. While the difference was $20, you weren't actually buying anything for $20. You were switching from a $45 plan to a $65 plan.

My guess is that Cingular still just has the $65 plan for international unlimited data. So, if you're on the $30 unlimited BIS plan and you want to get unlimited international data, the only place to go is to the $65 international plan and the added cost is $35.

You can be enabled for international data (data roaming) but there's no charge for it unless you use it, in which case you pay per-kilobyte. If you want unlimited international data then it's $65/month, no BIS-only unlimited international data.

Yep, so basically I can't get a price break. I could cancel and subscribe to the international plan everytime that I went in and out of other countries. Might save money that way. But I travel often to other countries and it is a pain to rememeber to set it up and cancel again.

I guess I am not going to save any money.

About turning the international plan off/on often -- I think you wouldn't be able to get Cingular to do this more than a couple of times a year. They don't like making frequent rate plan changes.

I've done this several times and got no push-back whatsoever from Cingular. They've been very accommodating.

They have suggested not dropping the international plan immediately upon returning, though. Apparently there can be a delay in charges appearing on the account, and if the charge appears after you've dropped the unlimited international plan, you get hit for the roaming amount. That's never happened to me, but that's what they said.
