Every now and then if I lose coverage in an elevator or something, evdo won't work until I turn the wireless off then back on after the 1x signal comes back. While not a huge problem, it is a little annoying.
Already done on both parts. My prl is updated every week at least since I actually work in a vzw call center and end up having to call it to help "special" customers. There's really no chance of it being updated too often either, prl's don't work that way.
My 7130e also flips back and forth between 1X and 1XEV. I've learned to stop worrying about it. Unless I'm using it tethered to my laptop, there's really no perceptible difference between 1X and 1XEV.
The BB is a wonderful device, but its form factor, relatively slow processor and limited application stack both limit the amount of bandwidth that I can consume with the device. It seems like 1X supplies about as much bandwidth as the thing can handle.
On the browser, for example, I find myself mainly using WAP sites. There's just not enough space on the device's screen to render a "real" web page. Since those WAP sites bandwidth requirements are pretty low, 1X's bandwidth is more than enough.
E-mail is the same story. The big attachments that suck up bandwidth in PC-based email just aren't that usable on the BB. So the ability to download a big attachment a second or two faster using EV-DO is negated by the time it takes the BB to do something with it.
I learned this lesson the week I spent in a place with strong 1X signal, but no EVDO. I saw no real difference in day-to-day usefulness of my BB.

So are you running .268 or higher?

It's not an overall coverage issue though. It'll work fine until I get in the elevator and then when I get out it doesn't work anymore until the reset.
for some reason today, my 1XEV reception that i usually have everywhere stopped and my vzw 7130e switched to 1X. i didn't know what was going on, so i turned on and off my wireless, turned on and off the handheld, yet it was still going to 1X. i have the most recent vzw firmware, and tried *22899. yet NONE of this worked!
i then did a reboot by taking out the battery and putting it back in -- low and behold, i have 1XEV again.
however, why'd it do this? it's really annoying because it's the first time that it's happened, and i KNOW that i have 1XEV coverage everywhere, so it shoulldn't be doing this. now it's fixed and all, but it's nonetheless annoying.

I have reported this through our internal network feedback system.
It got so bad for me that while sitting at my desk it would happen 5-6 times a day. Eventually I also had to pull the battery and it has worked fine for the last 4 days. Maybe it just needs a full reboot every now and then? Turning the power off on a blackberry just seems to turn the screen off instead off fully powering it down.
I would take it into the nearest store. My Sprint 7130e started doing that, then after a week or so, it was to the point where I had to be outside to even make phone calls. After the store ran a test, they said some part on my radio was dead & gave me a replacement. I only had the phone 2 months. I think this is definitely a Q/A issue with the 7130e.
The Verizon stores won't even touch a PDA/Blackberry. It's all done over the phone. Another odd thing was that it lost EVDO completely for a few days. No amount of resetting or battery pulling would fix it. Just as I was about to call tech support it came back on. Maybe 30 seconds before the call, it was wierd. EVDO wasn't down either since my regular phone showed/used it just fine.
I'm actually considering the 8703 now though. I can't find a description of the holster it comes with though. I want a soft one like the one that came with the 7130. Is it the same? Stupid problem, I know, but it works better for me than the plastic ones...
