Not true. If you have them send it to your e-mail address and not to your phone number then it won't charge you for a text message, it will be part of your data plan.

this is probably a very old post but, that would work in a perfect world but, i have over 100 contacts, who i send/receive texts from daily (not all 100 but you get the idea) to get a hold of each and every one of them and have them do the above would be a bigger pain in the ass than just paying the extra $5/200 texts or $9/400 texts... know what i mean???
either way, it will save at least 50% of the charges for texts, but you still have to pay...

It's just as easy to send a message to an email address as it is a phone number. All you have to do is save the email address under your contact and have them do the same. Or maybe I'm just not understanding what you are trying to say.
