Unhappy MidpSSH on Telus 7250 - Help please :(

Please Login to Remove!

I purchased a Telus 7250 on Aug 24 2006. It all seems to work fine. I installed the Alpha version of MidpSSH with hope of accessing sshd on my Linux box. I need to use the Alpha version because I use keyboard authentication. On the BlackBerry simulator everything works just fine but on the actuall 7250 BlackBerry it just says "Connecting to [server]...". I never get the "OK".

When I run netstat -c on the linux box I see the BlackBerry hitting the server but the IP address is 10.xxx.xx.xx (if I undertand this correctly). The linux box is on a telus adsl. Does this mean that the Telus BB does not allow TCP/IP to an external server (i.e. 10.xxx is a Telus internal address)? If this is the problem is there a way around it?

I've searched all the forums and all of midpssh's documentation for hours and I've found no solutions. I'm pulling my hair out! Does Telus even allow tcp/ip? Any help will be much appreciated. The BlackBerry has OS 4.1 and MidpSSH is version 1.5.6

Thanks! (PS No BES, just BlackBerry Internet Service with a data plan)

Actually, Midpssh unfortunately seems to have some problems. Try the trial version of Idokorro Mobile SSH. It gives you 20 connections before it expires, so that would at least let you figure out if it's midpssh or some server problem. I've found MobileSSH to be rather more reliable, but YMMV.

Default I just tried Idokorro Mobile, same result

I just tried Idokorro Mobile and I also tried to access another Linux server. Same results. netstat - c shows a series of

tcp 0 0 216.19.178.76.novus:ssh 10.79.247.126:62834 SYN_RECV

but never ESTABLISHED which is what a successful ssh client connection shows.

I can't quite understand the 10.79.247.126 address. Isn't that an internal IP address? I'm kinda green when it comes to networking knowledge.

Help?

Default The plot thickens...

Both servers, hosted by two different ISPs show the foreign IP address of 10.79.247.126 trying to access the server when I run midpssh or Idokorro (I use netstat -c on the Linux server to observe this).

So that seems to indicate that my BlackBerry's ip address (or a proxy) is 10.79.247.126. But again, with me not undertsanding too much about tcp/ip, isn't a 10.x.x.x address an internal ip address?

Unhappy More information

Further research indicates that Telus does NOT permit SSH to go through using BIS (no BES). I expect this applies to many third party apps. I'm bummed out on this one.

Actually BIS only allows connections on ports 80, 443 and anything above 1024, so you would have to configure your SSH server to accept connections over 1024. We have a new version of Idokorro Mobile SSH which will be released tomorrow that will allow you to specifically make connections over BIS.

Default Still no luck

The latest version of Idokorro gives me a message: "Exception: Socket channel not able to connect". My configuration:

1 - Telus (west coast)
2 - Blackberry 7250
3 - CDMA
4 - BIS (no BES)
5 - Running idokorro mobile ssh version 3.0.42

I'm still convinced that Telus is blocking but what I want to know is if anyone under the same configuration is getting through so I know if there's anything I can do. Since neither midpssh nor Idokorro can connect, I don't think it is a software issue.

What port are you using? The error you are describing is the normal error that you get when using a port that is not supported by BIS. BIS only supports port 80, 443 and greater than 1024, the default SSH port 22 is blocked by BIS, you must change it.

This is not a Telus only issue, since BIS is the same across all carriers, the carrier has no control over the available ports in BIS it is controlled by RIM. BIS does work, just remember the port limitations.

Pallie, you tried talking to level 2 support at telus?

It works like a charm on Rogers - the GPRS TCP/IP is wide open on Rogers...

Not to get into MIDPSSH vs MobileSSH discussion, it's not that -- it's probably the telus network..

so dive in... see if anyone else has it working on Telus. No one has it working on Bell.

It works on Rogers. Sorry for your luck. =)

Bell claims (but i doubt it) they will enable full tcp/ip soon.. telus would be in the same boat as Bell.. what's going on with Telus then?

To my knowledge TCP/IP on the 7250 on Telus doesn't work, but as I pointed out BIS does indeed work on ports greater than 1024 on Telus.

Talking Success! SSH can work on Telus with Idokorro!

Trying Idokorro Mobile 3.0.42 with sshd on port 22 didn't work via software's BIS setting but then I tried it on port 8088 and it works!

So midpssh doesn't work on west coast Telus 7250 CDMA with BIS (not port 22 nor port 8088). The old version of Idokorro doesn't work either but the new version with the BIS setting does work on port 8088. Thank you all and thank you Idokorro!
