Default For all those who have used a seperate magnet to modify a case

Please Login to Remove!

Which and where did you get yours and what would everyone recomend? Thinking about adding one to a case that I have and didn't want to buy one that would hurt the phone. Also where would be the best positioning of the magnet for it to work properly

Thanks,
Brian

Yea i know, looked at it and don't like it, but the case I'm modifying is one I have on my duty belt at work and the leather one from the store just won't hold up

I don't have a 8100 but I used a magnet from a 3.5 inch IDE hard drive for my 7130. Super strong and fairly small, I super glued it to the back of a case. I found that weaker magnets just don't get the job done.

And that doesn't hurt the phone in any way having a strong magnet next to it?

Heres what i did and its great

I took the case to my 30gb ipod that i wasnt using.

I took the one of the magents out of the shower curtain in the bathroom

I cut a rectangle out of the the sleeve from a black tshirt.

i sewed the rectange piece of sleeve with the magnet in it into the inside of the case

THat was it cost me not a dime used existing materials lol and the best part is i can lay the case onthe tabel and put the 8100 on top of it on the outside and it still goes to sleep. heres the pics

It took me awhile to figure out what exactly those last two pictures are.

I bought a case from Wal-Mart for $10. It's comfortable and holds the blackberry (sideways) perfectly and snugly.

The magent in the cover did nothing for the device shut-off, so I modded the holster.

- I took an old full-sized drive apart and took the magnet out.

-The magnet is loosely attached to a large piece of metal. I put it in the vice and tapped the metal off of the magnet.

-I took two pairs of pliers and easily broke the magnet into 4 pieces.

-I took two of the biggest pieces, cut slits on the backside, of either end, of the case, just big enough to slide the magnetic pieces in.

-I primed a small area around the slits with PVC primer (clear)

-I took a small dab of PVC cement (AKA GLUE for those in another thread) and sealed the slits.

Not too unsightly and besides, it's on the belt side of the holster. The device can go into the holster in any orientation and it turns off. The smaller pieces of magnet make it less likely that it will (if it was possible) erase any data.

Works %100

I looked at the SDA case and I didn't like it that much, I didn't like the gaps on the side of the phone since phone is smaller than SDA

but the case holds snug enough that unless your doing something really interesting the BB doesn't move. the only thing I don't like about it is its horizontal. thinking about a mod to the belt clip. hmm...

I have an old harddrive magnet that I use on my case for my Pearl. I decided to see just how robust these things were for magnets n things....I opened my 7780 up and put the magnet on various components for about 4 to 10 seconds (each component) and sure enough it booted back up and worked fine.

Since you'll have the housing in between also, you should be 100% good to go.
