Default BlackBerrys with no data plan…

Please Login to Remove!

Has any 3rd party written a automatic email retrieval app for the Pearl or any other BB so that the BB can just use a standard data plan and still retrieve PPP email?

(With Jim's statement about BB's without BB data plans)

It seems like the issue wouldn't be so much the software on the handheld as much as finding a substitute infrastructure for the Blackberry.

In case it wasn't clear, without a BlackBerry Data Plan you don't have access to the RIM infrastructure. No Data Plan - no e-mail. No way.

Yeah but hold up I think everyone is mininterpreting what he means. Yes you need a data plan to have push email and use the mail program and such on the BB to get email from an ISP. However, you can also download a Java based email application, and set it up with your ISPs IMAP or POP3 settings and have it check and receive mail. That still works fine, just that you will be charged per kb as per your provider. I'm with Rogers, and its 5 cents a kb, so I have a gmail account just for my blackberry set up, so that I can go in and send an email if I really need to, then just pay like 15 cents or so for it.

So you are able to pick up your e-mail without having a BlackBerry Data Plan on your account? Really....

Because with everyone else I know, if you don't have a BlackBerry Data Plan you get a "Data Connection Refused" error and you can't even get to the Internet...

Does such a program exist, or are you merely speculating? If such an animal exists it could be a valuable addition for times when RIM has a service outage.

Too many of these threads about a Blackberry with no data plan sound like pathetic attempts by teenagers to use the "latest and coolest personal bling" without paying for a plan. Like putting a Mercedes-Benz hood ornament on your 18 year old piece-of-crap Chevy Nova. Maybe I'm just cranky because it's Saturday and I had to go to work this morning, but I distinctly smell the odor of cheap-ass whiney wannabe's trying to fake it.

But you still need to get to the Internet to do that. The only way I know is to have some sort of data plan to get there, no matter if it is push or pull email.

Of course they exist, like here is Google mail for mobile for example. Sorry can't post links, just go to handango and check there

It must be different for you people in the US then because with Rogers in Canada it has nothing to do with it. IF you have a regular cell phone you don't need a data plan to go on the internet, its included with all plans, so its no different with BlackBerry going online either.

BlackBerry devices are not your standard cell phone. To access the internet you must have a BlackBerry data plan. No BlackBerry data plan = no internet = no Google mobile mail.

If you're going to go that route (no BIS, no BES) what use a BB at all? The devices are sort of limited. I would think some other PDA/phone would be better. Like something running Windows/Palm/Symbian/etc. Those would defintely have better third party email program support or they might support POP retrieval natively without a hosted service (like BIS is).

I'm not 100% positive the BB can get basic internet access without a BB plan (even if you intend to NOT use BB-specific features.

No Blackberry Data Plan, no Blackberry Data Services. It's not a cell phone, it's a Blackberry. It just happens to do phone calls too.

Just want to pop in and say:

I just got a used 7290 for my wife that I have no intention of getting a data plan for. She needed a phone that was sturdy, had bluetooth, a synch-able calendar, to-do list, and full keyboard to text with. The 7290 does all of the above, and I paid $50 for it.

It's different. You're wrong. You need a Blackberry Data Plan. Case closed.

What exactly is your point?
You're not using any data features... so you don't need a data plan.
This is entirely different than what the OP wants to accomplish.

You can browse the internet on a BB without the Blackberry Data plan. When sprint first started to carry 7130e, they let people use Power Vision (Sprint EVDO) data plan on the 7130e. Now they require you to have the BB data plan. As far as I know, people who got it at the beginning are still using the web browsing on a BB without the Blackberry data plan.
