Question Need a soft-reset application - anyone willing?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi folks -

With the advent of the 8100, we no longer have access to a key combination that allows the user to reset the OS on our blackberries. While it may seem as if one almost never has to reboot one's phone given the stability of the blackberry OS, there are many times when it makes sense to reboot (when the OS gets sluggish or voice dialing hangs, etc.) without having to pop the battery out.

Having said all of that, I'd think that it'd be a relatively simple task to write something that mimics the behavior of removing an app that prompts the user for a reboot, or mimics the keystrokes that the 8700 series uses to initiate an OS reset, or just plain calls the OS level API to signal such a reset request. Problem here is that I am not a Java developer - just a frustrated user who'd really appreciate such a simple application.

Moving forward, the app could be extended to something similar to the windows task manager that would allow the user to see what java apps are running and selectively terminate them to free up RAM on a sluggish phone... etc.

I think you will all agree that utilities are severely lacking for the blackberry OS - and it'd be a great boon to the expanding user base to have a utility such as the one I've described. Is anyone up to the task?? I'd be more than willing to lend a hand with testing and UI and feature suggestions...

TIA,
Stac

I totally agree with the above post. This has been a problem on 71xx series phones. A software fix has been discussed before on this forum, however, and no one has come up with a solution yet.

The only in-elegant solution I have found is to have a junk app installed on my 8100 that I can delete that prompts me to reboot. The battery door is so flimsy on my phone that I *HATE* removing it so often to perform this task - I know it's only a matter of time before it stops closing properly altogether. I hope that someone picks up the gauntlet and decides to write us something...

Regards,
Stac
