GPS and Cell Coverage

In order for Telenav to work, does it require a constant connection with the cell provider or just initially when the route is computed. In other words, are all of the maps associated with the route downloaded at the time that it is calculated or are they downloaded as you progress through your route? Cell coverage can be real spotty throughout Kentucky.
