Default 8100 + T-Mobile + Tether + Slingbox = working for you?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi everyone,

I have my T-Mobile Pearl successfully tethered to my WinXP laptop over USB.

Everyone works great (web-browsing, internet radio streaming, etc), except my Slingbox. I get an error when trying to connect to my home server via the tethered BlackBerry.

I am able to connect to my Slingbox over WiFi, and also over my Verizon EVDO card, just not via the Pearl's EDGE connection!

Has anyone else tried this, and if so, what was your result?

I Would think that because edge is so slow that it would be difficult if not impossible to stream uring your slingbox because the pearl has no WiFi. but idk maybe just maybe

Yeah, I thought about that, however I'm getting an initial connection error before the Slingbox even starts trying to stream. It seems like the port might be blocked almost?

I'm sure it is... I know for sure T-Mobile block MS VPN connection ports, so it wouldn't be out of the question that they would block slingbox's ports also.

I love my Pearl but I really dont think its powerful enough for things like that even if it had wifi or EVDO.

I've got the Pearl (T-Mob) tethered with my laptop and connecting to my slingbox without issue. I did change the default port number during the slingbox setup (I'm just over cautious like that). My current config is as follows:

slingbox --> Router --> DSL Modem -->[DynDNS.org to acccount for dynamic IP]-->Internet

On the slingplayer (either PC or WinMobile) I connect using my dyndns name and my user defined port #.

Even if you "could" get this to work - at edge speeds the video quality would be pretty horrible and most likely unwatchable.

Also - I don't think your mobile provider would be keen on funneling loads of free video to your phone. Which is probably why they have the port blocked on their end.

Too bad though - it would be sweet if I could watch my slingbox on my pearl.

I beg to differ...I'm watching my slingbox on my laptop via USB bluetooth from my 8100 and its pretty decent.

I've got the same setup but no way is my download speed consistent enough for my slingbox. What speed are you getting? I'm in Seattle, home base of t-mobile and my speed avg 35kps which is not enough for my slingbox.

You can watch remotely shows located at home via a sling box.

I'm hitting 171Kpbs and I have very decent quality even when in fullscreen mode. I sling while at work at the 22 and 57 freeway interchange in SoCal. And typically I use about 300 million bytes recieved a day through the connection via bluetooth not wired.

I have also texted via BBMessenger, synced and many other options function while still watching MySling.

When I had a MDA on T-mobile, I had no problem watching my SlingBox on the device itself. I do have a good signal where I live though. I don't remember the speeds though. Tethering should be the same. No matter what, the SlingBox is limited to your upload speeds from your house whether you have Edge or 3G. For me, I top out at .5mb outside my LAN.
