Funny. I've had my Pearl for 5 days and didn't see the mute button until last night. I came on here today and the first thread is about the mute button. Weird.

Its a new feature of this board - reads your mind. Be careful.

I upgraded my handheld software. Search for version upgrade in the forums and you'll find the 'how to'. Basically, get the software from a carrier, run it, delete the vendor.xml file from your c:\, then run your BB desktop software.

Once you do that, the software gets upgraded on the phone. Takes about 20 mins but my problem went away. Good luck.

"stand by" mode is not the same as lock? I'm using autolock and though I was safe saving some battery.

I noticed a couple of threads with posts asking about the difference b/w standby and key lock. a definite answer, however, is nowhere to be found.

any suggestions? thanks!

When you and others are in the middle of a phone call and talking to somebody through the speaker phone, if you press the mute button, then you can have a conversation between yourselves which does not get transmitted to the other side. Then, push the mute button again, and you can continue the conversation. It is a very nice feature for these situations.

I still don't really understand where the power saving from standby comes in if you can still receive calls/messages. Is this just because it's not 'ready' to instantly come on unless you de-standby it?

Another thing mute does, is mutes the ringer when the phone is ringing, that is to say, instead of pressing Ignore on a call and sending it right away to voicemail which in turn lets people know you just "Ignored" them, it'll just mute the ringer and let it ring out to voicemail normally.

It only mutes for that instance of an incoming call, next call it wont still be muted. Which is good.

As far as what standby actually does, no clue there but it does extend battery life, for sure, noticeably, so it does do something.

Maybe reduced and/or timed polled data transferes. No clue.
