Default Lock/Unlock in OS 4.2.1

Please Login to Remove!

Lock the device
Verify that you have set a BlackBerry® device password.
On the Home screen or in the application list, click
Lock.
To unlock your device, on the Lock screen, click the trackball. Click
Unlock. Type your device password. Press the Enter key.

In reality all you have to do is start typing your password from the home screen. If you have your dial from home screen option set to off, so that home screen shortcuts do work, you can hit K to lock the device.

Lock the keyboard
If you do not set a BlackBerry® device password, you can lock your keyboard to avoid making calls and pressing keys accidentally.
On the Home screen or in the application list, click
Keyboard Lock.
To unlock the keyboard, press the asterisk (
*) key and the Send key.

In previous versions of the RIM OS dating back to atleast 3.6, if the device was locked, you could select 'Unlock' from the lock menu and it would actually unlock the device. It no longer does so, and people are upset by this. If you only seek to prevent accidental keypresses, see the following.

Turn on standby mode
If you are not on a call, you can turn on standby mode to avoid pressing keys accidentally when you are not using your BlackBerry® device.
Hold the
Mute key.
To turn off standby mode, press the
Mute key again.

This will allow incoming calls and emails. This is not a security feature, but it does prevent accidental keypresses.

I personally don't understand locking the device without a password. All rants and raves accepted.

Simple reason why lock/unlock without a password is better than standby...it comes on automatically when you holster. No pressing "K", no turning on standby with the mute button, and no forgetting to do it, followed by unintended calls. Just put the unit in the holster, and it's locked. If I could set the unit to standby when I put it in the holster, my problem would be solved...

And if say you don't use a holster? if you instead just throw this device into your coat / shirt / pants pocket or purse or something?

Then standby is your ticket, since you can do one-handed "unlock"

just out of curiosity, it would be really retarded to even have the Unlock option available when you click the trackball. Why would they add it to the OS but have it disabled? Doesn't make sense, sure there isn't something else you can set to make that work?

BB is always on, and always locked w/password...

Takes 2 sec to unlock, and can anwer calls when locked...no reason not to.

Just my nickel...

I set it to lock if unused for about 30-60 minutes. That way, if I lose it or leave it somewhere, like a taxi, I feel my data is secure, but my general daytime use is unlocked. That's for the 8700. Is the 8800 different?

So there is currently no way to use the Menu Unlock option then? Am I reading all of this correctly? One of our Sr. Managers here is looking to use the menu to unlock as opposed to the '*' + 'Send' method... thoughts?

Thanks folks!

Can't be done. It's a "feature" of 4.2 that can't be changed. Sorry. You get used to the *+Send concept pretty easily.

Default Lock vs Standby

Anyone else have the problem of standby not exactly working to disable keys while hiberating in your pocket? I tried using standby for the first few weeks of having the 8800 but then found that it made calls while in my pocket (no, I don't use a holster). Apparently somehow in my movements throughout the day the mute or power key ends up getting pushed again and the keypad gets unlocked.... and my friends and family ask why I called them earlier that day!

Back to locking! No accidental phone calls.
