I pay for data already, for emails and web browsing. I do not want to pay for SMS messages too.

Yeah I already pay $20 a month for unlimited data. And JiveTalk is great and works well. Well worth the one time $30 fee. Don't wanna add another $15 a month to have unlimited sms. So free it may be for now. But in the long run I think the data works in my favor.

being that anyone with a blackberry should have a data plan, I'd HIGHLY suggest you use data instead of SMS, or at least have the option of it. You will be really limiting your target audience if you use SMS only..... Most of us here dont use the build in AIM program because its SMS.

Agree. If use data I would like to try it too since I have unlimit data. But if is SMS guess guess would have to count me out since I don't want to pay SMS extra SMS fee.

digg_man, I think you need to clarify on the SMS thing. I see a lot of concerns here and I share the same: sending IMs via SMS as the ONLY option is VERY limited and very expensive these days. The way I understood it initially was the "Ability" to send data via SMS only indicates "Ability" aka Option to send via SMS. Am I correct to say that this SMS is an OPTION and not the SOLE medium in which this messenger will communicate? That this software will, by default, use data to transmit and receive messages and NOT, by default, use SMS messages (everyone I know has a cell phone, I can already send them a text message any time I want)?

I'm in even though I paid for JiveTalk and love it. I have friends that are starting to use "Blackberries" and they are not as tech savvy nor would put out anymore money for an IM program.

It'd be great if this worked out. JiveTalk is indeed the best out there (at the moment), but a lot of people aren't excited to spend $20-30 for something as basic as an IM client.

They put a lot of hard work into JiveTalk and I've got no problem with them charging for it, but there's still room in the market for a really good open IM client - a hole RIM basically left wide open with their lame options.

Yes, since we have unlimited data, it will not be a good thing if we have to send IM using SMS.
On the other hand, I know for IM+, you can actually use yahoo to send SMS to mobile user (that don't have IM), and that way, you don't have to pay for SMS cost, and also can still chat with other that don't have messenger service on their phone. THis will be a good feature.
ANother thing I would like to see is the abilities to do conferences (i.e. multi people chat).
Yes, JiveTalk is good, but anything free is even better

I currently use JiveTalk. It concerns me that this one uses sms instead of data.

Default Does not use SMS

Just to clear this up.

The official website clearly states that Jivetalk doesn't use SMS:

beejive :: JiveTalk mobile messaging

"jiveTalk™ uses your phone's data plan - No per message charges."

Sometimes I wonder if mis-information is consciously propagated.
