Wink Comparison

Before someone else does this, I'll do it myself...
Here is the news, the new Idokorro Blackberry Viewer 2.0 is out.
So let's do a quick comparison between this tool and my own tools:

My tools:
  • free of cost
  • javaloader not included due to legal stuff
  • user feedback and response (fixes, enhancements)
  • integrated update function
  • copy picture to clipboard function
  • BBScreenShooter:
    • colorful shaded frames
    • picture viewer
    • resize option
    • minimize to tray and hotkey assignment
    • jpg, png, bmp file format (no gif due to license issues)
    • auto-numbering of the screenshots
  • BBScreenStream:
    • resize with aspect ratio
    • pause function (with keyboard or mouseclick)
    • avi file video creation

Idokorro Blackberry Viewer 2.0:
  • javaloader bundled
  • now as well resize with aspect ratio
  • now as well screenshots supported (plus gif format)
  • expires in May or will cost 25$

I guess my tools still offer more features and, what is best, they are still free of charge.

In addition the Idokorro tool still can't handle passwords with blanks.
Try to enter one and you won't even get asked again to correct it...

And now something that really shocked me:
The Blackberry password is stored in the registry in CLEAR text
That does not really follows the secure approach RIM did with the whole BlackBerry device implementation.

Until my latest beta version I did not offer to store passwords at all because of security. My latest versions allow storing the password, but at least I tried to give it a simple encryption and there is a little "unlocked"
warning icon displayed on startup.

Greetings
Michael

EDIT:
no need to try the betas anymore, the new released versions are out, use the links somewhere below in the thread

Default 8830 and javaloader

Hi,

does anyone already have a 8830 and has tested bbscreenshooter against it?
Or just the "javaloader.exe -u screenshot" command?
It was reported to me that it does not work.
Anyone with the same or different experience?

Default 8830 testing

Hello,

I have a demo 8830 and it will not take a screenshot with your app or BBScreen.

If you want to troubleshoot with me let me know.

I just learned today that this is an issue with early 8830 models only and due to the OS version. Future models and OS versions will work as expected.

I use the ScreenShooter only. I have to say, I'm very impressed. Simple, easy to use, and worked without issues. Great job!

Superb utilities. Thanks! It works really well with my 8700g..

.. but unfortunately not on my 8300 (OS v4.2.2.67 Platform 2.4.0.29)

I don't know if my retail version of the Curve has the same OS as the one as jlentendre who said above that he has a demo version.

Since I got a few questions on that topic...

If you want both tools to remember your BlackBerry password, you need to do the following:

-open the ini file with a text editor (e.g. Notepad)
-find the entry
Code:
rememberPassword = 0
-change it to
Code:
rememberPassword = 1
-save the ini file

From now on your password will be stored encrypted in the ini file.
(users in high secured environments should notice that the encryption method used is by no means bullet proof)
You will see a little "open lock" icon in the picture area of both tools to remind you of this setting.

Greetings
Michael

latest change: version 1.50c

Thanks to Nicolas Miyamoto the help text for BBScreenShooter is now available in French as well.

No news on the 8830 or 8300 issues other than they apply only to a few devices. It seems there are devices with no problems taking screenshots.
Can anyone confirm to be able to take screenshots for a 8830 or 8300?

Greetings
Michael

Michael,

I've just tried out v1.50c and unfortunately it doesn't work on my 8300 OS v4.2.2.67 Platform 2.4.0.29.

Hopefully it will work when RIM release an OS update for the Curve.

T-Mobile Europe Europe offers:

Link to free download area

Unfortunately I don't have a device to test with.

I tested it with BB 8300 (4.2.2.89, Rogers) does not work. Says "Shot failed". Do you have any logging for it?

What do you mean with logging?
If you use the javaloader from the command prompt you will get a "invalid signature" error. It's all in the code signing.
Again, I heard that the t-mobile OS works.

The links to the tools are posted multiple times in this thread, but here they are again:

BBScreenShooter
BBScreenStream
I am still looking for volunteers who can translate the help text.
(done so far: english, german, turkish; italian, french, spanish; looking for: any other)

Greetings
Michael

I tried it on 3 different 8300's. All give the shot failed message. These are all on the att network if that matters. Version 4.2.2.89.

I would love to get this great program working on the 8300.

This is from the Idokorro BB Viewer, not sure if it applies to the BB Screen Shooter or not... :
Issue with BlackBerry Device Software v4.2.2
(affecting the BlackBerry 8300 Curve and 8830)
There is a new security feature in v4.2.2 of the BlackBerry Device Software that causes a problem with BlackBerry Viewer. There is a workaround for users of these BlackBerry smartphones who connect through a BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Note: We apologize, but there is currently no known solution for users of the BlackBerry 8300 Curve or 8830 who do not connect through a BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

The workaround must be performed by the administrator of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Summary of the Problem: The BlackBerry Viewer works by displaying a rapid series of screenshots. In BlackBerry Device Software v4.2.2, a new security default setting prevents the capture of screenshots. There is a new IT Policy that controls the capture of screenshots, but it is not a part of any version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server that has been released yet.

Solution: RIM has a Knowledge Base article (KB05439) about how to import IT Policy rules for BlackBerry Device Software 4.2. That article also provides you with an IT Policy definitions file with the new screenshot IT Policy. Use this IT Policy to allow screenshots for the user of BlackBerry Viewer, and the application will work.

I met you at WES in one of the sessions this year and have used your tools ever since. It is great for training as well as getting screenshots to get exactly what is happening on certain devices. Its finding these little gems at WES that make me go back year after year.
